Things they don't tell you.Thngs they don’t tell you about losing your grandfather on a Tuesday night:
When you wake the next morning, you still
need to get out of bed in time for work, you still
have to shower, dress yourself, eat breakfast, brush
your teeth and hair;
and when your mother calls
to check in, you have to comfort her because she lost
her dad last night;
and when you call your grandmother
your voice cannot waver lest you upset her, because
she lost a man she's known for seventy years and even
though she would never hold it against you, you still
feel obligated not to cry;
and when you sit down
to do your job, you will have to do it with all your heart
because if you can
turn backthere is no point in a downward punch
striking fights at those who've slighted
none, a gun firing at anyone sun-touched
on a summer afternoon — look there,
at the fire hose that washes down a half-
standing bastard already stripped bare bones
from the surge; why do you target this?
why do you target this? why do you target
this fire when you know you cannot douse
the human spirit with a geyser? the human
bone will crack, even as it's polished clean
with water, or fire;
the spirit's pyre burns,
and shifts. putting out one does not stem
the fire, but spreads it farther, wider, brighter;
this is not a one-way street, and you should
turn back now.
SunburstEight in the morning and my shaved head
burns tan with summer, eighty-five degrees
of heat and separation, and the air
conditioner has conditioned me to roll
the windows down
my hand against my sweat-drenched forehead
and my eyes at the cars around me.
Perspective tells me I should be glad the car works.
The migraine tells me I should murder everyone.
Pigeons on a nearby traffic sign are playing
their usual game of "which car is best
to crap on, and how long will that crap sizzle
before it dries", and I'd feel bad for that Lexus
under them if he hadn't cut me off two miles back.
The pigeons hav
Swimming LapsSummer evenings sit heavy on the shoulder,
a deep exhale that clings at the skin, slick
and sticky until submerged underwater.
The sky's a popsicle swirl of pink and orange
that sets the chlorine-clouded water ablaze,
wave ripples shining, their own miniature suns.
Swimming laps are lessons in repetition, splitting
orange water in half one way, then splitting it again
in the same one way, but from the other side,
weighed down more and more with each go,
expecting different results every time.
By evening the pool is empty, though the splashing
and playful shouts of children bound along the edges
long after, when water seeps into ears and makes
permanent residence, a codependency of sorts.
As sun sets, the echoes fade into the water
of the ears, and outside life disappears until
nightfall, when cleaning them out afterward.
Water sits heavy on the shoulder at night, cool
beads clung to prickling hairs and withered skin
as an attempt at dryness is made. Removing
water from the ear stings l
A New CatOur neighborhood stray is dead. I know this
because there is a black cat here I've never seen.
This cat is not the black splotch covered canvas stray
that clawed up and down my arm last winter
when I mistakenly tried to wrap it in a blanket
for warmth. This cat does not have the matted
fur that the stray did, does not deliberately stretch
out in front of my car tires the way the stray did
right before I had to leave for work, does not
chase lizards in the grass like the stray. This is not
the stray that aggressively meowed at me
when he wanted affection, nor is it the stray
that climbed our fence to try catching birds.
I'm certain this new cat must be lost, or else
looking for that same blotched canvas stray
that had become part of his family, too.
Free Plushie Patterns Online
Here's a collection of links to sites outside of DeviantArt where you can find free plushie patterns. There are well over two hundred choices, so you're sure to find something you like.
However, if you can't find exactly what you're looking for, try adapting one of the patterns. For example, a tiger can easily be turned into a lion, an elephant into a woolly mammoth, an elf into a goblin, or combine the upper half of a mermaid with the lower half of a pony to get a centaur.
Note: some pages may need to be translated or require sign-up to view free patterns.
