Hello everyone!

Last month, we released More Like This to you all, and after gathering your feedback, we've made some changes to better your browsing experience!

What's New

Browse Changes

  • Toggling Endless Scrolling: Several members preferred the original paging interface rather than infinite scrolling. With this change, we added the ability to switch between both modes, a setting which will be preserved as you browse.

  • Optimized Scrolling: We've made some improvements to optimize performance and loading times while browsing with infinite scrolling. The biggest change is that thumbnails on pages that are out of sight will get removed as you scroll, lowering the memory requirements and noticeably improving scrolling performance. Under normal circumstances this should not be visible at all; however, when quickly jumping to a different position in the page, you might see an empty page for a moment while the system restores the thumbnails.
  • Full View Descriptions: We've added deviation descriptions to the Full View browse mode, as many deviants requested they be made visible. Longer descriptions will be automatically cut off, with the remainder available after clicking the "Show" button.

  • Jump-to navigation: We now indicate where in the result stream you are by displaying the range next to the 'Top' navigation element.  This indicator can be clicked on to jump to a specific result as well.

More Like This

  • Better Results: One of the more common issues reported for More Like This was inaccurate results. The search team has been hard at work and is rolling out several changes to search servers powering More Like This, which we hope you'll find provide noticeably more accurate results. We are still making changes, so expect this to improve even more in the coming days.
  • Deviations Mode is now Relevance Mode: All of the results were deviations, and so labeling the default results as Deviations Mode was a bit confusing. Since the actual order of More Like This results is by relevance, the mode is now called Relevance Mode.
  • "Organize By": While we were very fond of the original "mode picker" found at the top of the left bar, which contained tiny thumbnails of the results it would take you to, we found it was too shiny and distracting, to the point of not signaling its functionality properly. We've replaced it with a more traditional, more familiar setup.

  • Artist Diversity: Under certain circumstances, More Like This will return many deviations by either one artist or a very small set of artists. While not wrong, many deviants were expecting to use More Like This to discover artists other than the ones they were already familiar with. We wanted the interface to actively promote the other modes in More Like This - Artists and Collections. With this change, we will be alerting members to the possibility of using Artist and Collection Modes when we detect the top results are mostly from a small set of artists.

  • Quality of Results: Some deviations we simply don't know enough about to return the really good results you're used to with other deviations. We'd like to highlight this case, so you know what happened, and so you're aware the results don't represent More Like This in general. We're also calling on deviants to help us improve the results for that deviation by asking them to collect it with deviations that are actually similar.
  • Retaining Preferences: The More Like This links found when hovering over thumbnails in a More Like This result page will no longer send you to Relevance Mode by default, but will instead keep you in the mode that you're currently in (Relevance, Artist or Collection).
Please note that the results when organizing by Collection are not as relevant as they should be. We are working on a fix for this that will be implemented soon.

Bug Fixes

  • Updating the URL of the page during scrolling and mode changes had a few issues which were resolved. This was also affecting superbrowse, and generally making bookmarking/linking to something more difficult.
  • Various bugs were fixed that caused certain pop-up elements (including moods and comments) to open under other elements.
  • "Request as Print" buttons no longer appear on non-printable deviations.
  • "More Like This" buttons no longer appear on deviations that are in storage or have release forms pending.
  • In some situations where the search box was selected, using keyboard shortcuts would register as trying to type into the search box instead of as keyboard shortcuts.
  • The pencil icon and menu found when viewing one's own Galleries and Collections was sometimes showing in the wrong place, or missing altogether.
  • Clicking the search box would always select the text, making it very difficult to select and edit part of the search query with your mouse.
  • Current scroll location was not being restored when a page was refreshed.

Try it out!

Just like before, you can give these changes a try by going to the Browse page and clicking More Like This on a deviation, or by going to a deviation page and selecting the More Like This button on the right side of the deviation page!

If you come across any problems while browsing, searching, or using More Like This, let us know by filing a ticket in the :devdevbug: Issue Tracker under the More Like This project.
