In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Upcoming Changes

In the coming months, you may notice that the weekly Change Log is shorter than usual. This is because we're hard at work on a variety of major projects, and our development teams are focusing their energy almost solely in these areas. Stay tuned, as we'll have more exciting information on those projects in the next few weeks!

We will still be addressing bug reports during this time, so if you encounter any bugs, please do file a Bug Report about it at the Help Desk.

Change Log

  • On the mobile website, all comments were briefly displaying as Featured by Owner. Fixed by inazar
  • Uploading images for avatars and the deviantID widget was briefly broken. Fixed by randomduck

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Deviants were positive about the addition of editing comments.
  • Some deviants voiced concern regarding abuse of the Hide Comment feature. As a reminder in cases like this, if you feel that someone is using the comment system to leave comments that are against our Etiquette Policy, then please file a Policy Inquiry about it at the Help Desk.
  • Responses to the Discuss topic varied. Generally, deviants mentioned that the advice they would give is to leave good feedback for artists, comments that are to the point but also considerate and constructive.
  • In response to the Discuss topic, Eldr-Fire's advice was to be sure not to make your comments about you, but rather about the art you're commenting on, as that will be the most helpful for the artist.

Discuss!

Works In Progress

Do you post works in progress to deviantART? Are you comfortable with posting works in progress to your main Gallery, or do you post to your Scraps? Do you upload them to Sta.sh to share with other artists whose feedback you value first, or are you more inclined to post them publicly?

I am with SigiTurtle there. I have a lot of watchers who don't watch my scraps. I don't either for others. It would be great to have a WIP section for those who do WIP submissions. Also posting to the Stash is something I don't use often. Plus no one would know if I even posted anything in there. Even if I made a journal I myself don't have anyone who ever reads them to my knowledge. None of my watchers ever comment on them.

Hi^^
I don't know if this was mentioned yet:

When I browse pictures of my watchlist I'd love to see directly if this pic is in my favourits already without having to click it. Would that be possible?

And I'd looooove to have a WIP section to put WIPs there *.*

I don't post WIPs. I have one WIP deviation that I change from time to time just to let people know that I'm working, but lately it's been the same work because of reasons.
I don't know what I'm doing with my Scraps. It's just stuff in there..

Well, if all my WIPs looked like JW's then yeah, I'd post them!
Seriously though, I sometimes post them to get feedback.

About the WIPs: Depends on the WIP, as rarely as I post them at all, I usually post WIPs to the main gallery if I take a good photo. If it's not really anything fancy or just to show the commissioner, I post it to stash or outside dA. And I usually delete WIPs once I finish the picture.

I have a suggestion for uploading deviations!

Could you please consider changing the folder destination options so that it can recognize and differentiate between folders and sub-folders?

I have a hard time putting the deviations in the right folders when everything is in alphabetical order, and sometimes the folders I want are next to folders which aren't even related!

Thank you!

Could uploading images be for the mobile website. I tried it on my phone but it wouldn't allow me to do that. It could possibly just be my phone. I have a Nokia Lumia 521. Anyway if it's not my phone it would be really great if that feature could be implemented that would be great.

Most of my WIPs go straight to Sta.sh but I do post some of them. Mostly as Scraps since it's not a proper piece just a little heads to my friends that shows what I am currently working on.

Yeah, for works in progress I generally use Sta.sh as a way to send drafts for feedback when other options aren't available or working.

I wouldn't post a WIP on dA proper until it is finished, unless it's an ongoing story but even then I consider dA the point of publishing, the gold version as it were.

Usually I post them on Stash to share with other friends and see what they think.

But sometimes I post them in Scraps if I ever post them.

I have a dedicated folder for WIP. People like to see how my work was made, so sometimes I'll put all the WIP images for one project into a single WIP deviation. :)

I Usually Put Them In My Facebook Page, But Sometimes I Love To Show My Watchers Some Of Them.
But When I Post Them In DA
I Put Them To My Main Gallery
But It Way Too Better To Put Them In Scarps~

I would like an option to place WIPs and Sketchbook Drawings into a particular
category without them getting moved to scraps. Its a little disheartening tbh.

Also, using scrap work from your gallery section as your ID on the front
page would be nice too.

WIPs are interesting.. I've been saying for a while it would be helpful if you could upload multiple images under one "Deviation", that could be swapped between as easily as one might swap between large and small by clicking on it. You'd set the finished product as the default one to display, but it would leave the WIPs there to study too, without cramming your gallery with redundant images, or relegating them all to the scraps gallery..  it might also be neat for things with multiple finished products, such as concept art that comes in multiple parts

If the author put his picture to delete, but this image has added to favorites by many people,

so I think  this picture should not disappear permanently, the people of collecting this picture  should still can see it.

so I suggest  deviantart should  copy the picture which will be deleted immediately and  have been added to favorites by many people..

I think the author and owner of the picture has the right to do anything they want with the uploaded picture. Keeping their art by DeviantArt would be a violation of copyrights, I guess. To me, adding an artwork to favourites shouldn't be a way to save pictures, but a way to appreciate artist. If I don't want my artwork to be in my gallery, I also don't want it to be elsewhere on the dA.

If you already sold something to someone,do you want to take the things back without his consent ?

Adding to favourites is not buying, so this comparison isn't really right. Besides when I sell something to someone they get it also via mail, electronic or traditional one, so they don't need to have it in their favourites.

i see it equals  i  'bought'  it 。。if  the author doesn't want  to 'sell' the picture, he should not put it on the web.

not all artists put their work on the web to sell it. especially if all you can pay is a favourite. you can't stay alive for long receiving only favourites ;)

just normal. it's the artist's right to delete the picture.

I think there's no point in further discussion, you have your opinion and I have mine. that's okay :)

It would be nice if there was a way to edit received notes similar to editing comments.

Once you send an e-mail you can't edit it, or if you chat online usually you also can't edit sent messages. Notes work similar way, so I think it's just fine :) you can always send another note.

I was thinking more in the line of when people role play versus just regular conversation. At times it would be easier to edit a part than send the entire thing over again.

Notes follow  different logic, though: after someone reads them, editing wouldn't bring it to their attention, again. It's far better to just send a new note, the way I see it.

After improving comments, maybe you could improve the polls, somewhen in the future? Allowing multiple-choice, and especially, allowing you to view the results without having to vote, and maybe allowing to change your answer after you submitted.
I'd love to see these things added to polls, the possibility to view the results without voting being the most important one.

WIPs

I post some just for fun. I upload them to my main gallery and leave them there for a couple of weeks and then move them to scraps. I used to post them directly to scraps, but I made a poll asking my watchers whether they preferred them in scraps or in the main gallery (so they're more likely to get a notification) and the majority voted Main Gallery, so that's what I do.

As I said, I post them for fun, not for critique. When I want critique, I get it off-site.

and when I do ,I don't post'em to my Scraps. just post them in my main gallery or sta.sh .

Hello, am I the only one to experiencing this issue? :

When submitting a deviation to a group, ( "contribute art" button ) it open the window where I can choose the folder and one of my deviations, but when I click on a deviation, it is automatically de-selectioned , so I can't click on the "submit" button.

I am looking for where the problem could come from, it's obviously not from the groups or because I didn't read the group's rules, or because I am not allowed to submit, I checked.

If someone is experiencing the same issue, please let me know!
