My poem of red by Piroshki-Photography
In our continuous effort to improve the DeviantArt experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Collaborative Deviations: A Discussion

A common request from deviants is to post collaborative deviations, where more than one deviant has worked to create the end product. In a recent journal, we briefly addressed why we haven’t yet undertaken collaborative deviations. However, we want to open a discussion around how collaborations could theoretically work, so that we can better understand the community’s desires for such a feature.

Change Log

  • Some tools in DeviantArt muro wouldn't work properly, when editing an already existing deviation. Fixed by outgoingcoyote
  • There were some display issues when viewing the artists section of More Like This results. Fixed by outgoingcoyote

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update!

In response to the Discuss topic, deviants said that they found themselves watching more artists, particularly in instances where they thought they were watching deviants that they weren't. neurotype also noted that it has made the unwatching process easier, in incidents where they no longer wanted to get updates from deviants they were watching before.

Discuss!

Collaborative Deviations

Because we're already holding a discussion this week, we'd like you to join the conversation about collaborative deviations on the discussion journal! We'll be back with a new Discuss topic next week.

have another tagging option such as like <username> tag which will send a request to the user confirming they've worked on the piece and once this is done it will be added to their gallery as well BUT the piece will share ONE statistic , there will be only ONE deviation but where the username goes there will be two usernames . This means there will be only one piece of art that is showcased in two users galleries, under the piece will have two usernames ONE comment section ONE amount of favourites and ONE ammount of views

Just had a thought about the split between group deviations and deviant deviations on the watch page:

If journals are deviations too, should they not also be split by deviant or group?
Personally I'd still prefer the ability to toggle the two versions, but that's just me.

I would have a "add collaborator" box in the Submit page, like the "add tags" text field, maybe under "Publishing Options." That person/those people would then get a Mention notification in their notification center, and the deviation would list on both artists' pages as their own deviation, able to be manipulated individually by each of them. The :deviantart: app already has an "add people" section, though it's laid out very differently from the main site.

Well i have noticed that there are almost always more favorites on pictures then comments so what i was kinda thinking is that if people could just put their mouse over the picture and a comment box would just show up so you can comment without going into the picture, then pictures would receive more.  I know some people think it's a drag to have to click on the picture to comment so they won't comment at all and that's disappointing. I'm a small account so i don't get much attention anyways and when i do post something it's always way more favorites then comments. I just think if there was a faster way to comment of pictures then more people would.

Why is the logo rainbow? Is it because of gay marriage being legalized? Not everyone agrees with the idea of homosexuality. Some find it sad and even disgusting. I don't think they should have it as a logo. It looks cool, but i dont like the meaning of it.

What are you on about? This is Deviantart the epitome of freedom of expression, so if you have a problem with the logo, you're on the wrong site.

I just don't think it should be on there for everyone. Would if they suddenly put a religious cross for the logo? Almost everyone is an atheist on this site and they would be very uncomfortable.

Regardless of who's uncomfortable or not,  I think we still need to remember Deviantart is also organization and is making a statement to say they support gay rights.

I think symbolism isn't something they should just do for the sake of doing, in this case a very important decision was made concerning gay rights aka human rights.
The right to be gay, the right to get married. I think it's important for them to be transparent about their support, and perhaps also so people who don't like what they stand for to be informed in their decision whether or not to continue to participate on their platform.

If Christians were given the right to participate in a right given to everyone else denied to them for centuries simply because they were born into Christianity, I'm sure DA would find a way to celebrate that as well.

I guess you are right. People who disagree with gay rights don't have to participate in their events. Thank you for acting mature and for your reasonable explanation. :)

I ask myself the same! I guess is cause the USA supreme court decided that same-sex couples have the constitutional right to marry, buuuuut I don't really know if there will be a badge or something [which I don't think it'll be Q_Q]

That is sad to think that there are those who have been provided the freedom to have such a great community of artist are celebrating its demise because they don't comprehend what a Gov. should and should NOT do. This Gov. has abused its power and you are celebrating that. So yes bubble of having a secure nation that is suppose to protect my freedoms, not enslave me, has burst.

Thanks for taking the time to express yourself.

Lol uhh what? You're still free to believe in whatever you want to believe. You're still free to be a homophobic despite how little sense that makes. You're still free to do the same shit you do every single day. Nothing has changed, except that american LGBT can get married now. That's it. Stop acting like it's the end of the universe. If anything, the government has provided more rights for american citizens who need them. It's a shame you're choosing to be on the wrong side of history. I wouldn't be surprised if you happened to be racist or sexist too, since not that long ago black people and women were treated the same way, and people acted the same way you are acting right now.

Uhhh... I'm not American. Gay marriage has been legal here in Canada since 2005 and it's been 10 years, I have yet to see my country fall apart. If anything, it's a very happy and safe place to be.

i think it should be like posting a regular deviation but you add the usernames and then a request goes out to their inbox that you can accept and allow them to post

Dear Trevor, may I ask if when saying deviation in this case, the journals are also included? I found some announcements in 2011 that the journals were made deviations. Is this discussion including journals as well? :flirty:

I enjoy doing collabs a lot with friends and other artists I admire and my gallery contains a lot of them.

I find collabs much better and more fun to do than art trades.

Well, to be honest, they are in the sense that you can find them in the browsing section and can be searched by tags. As for that i don't know either, it doesn't make sense if you consider a deviation = artwork; if it means anything you post here, then technically it is a deviation. But for people like me who joined a while back a deviation is still an artwork and a journal is still a journal :stare:

I actually found a comment from c. 2009 that made mention of not being able to even favorite journals. So, apparently, that's something that's changed over the years as well.

One reason I can think for making the change is that you can store deviations (which you wouldn't be able to do to a journal otherwise). So if someone had something they wanted to hang on to, but they didn't want it to be visible on their account any longer, they could store it and still keep all of the comments, the upload time stamp, etc. Not saying that's the only reason it was done, but it might have been a consideration.
