In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Commissions on deviantART (Beta Testers)

The deviantART community is full of talented artists and art appreciators looking to commission custom artwork. We’re excited to announce that we’re launching Commissions on deviantART to all Beta Testers, a feature that connects artists with clients, creating custom artwork in exchange for real earnings.

Please note: Currently, the Commissions widget can only be installed by Beta Testers, but everyone has the ability to request a Commission from Beta Testers during this testing period.

The only truly valid issue that others have not said as far as I can tell...it would be great to see less strict rules governing where widgets go. It would be awesome iff more things could fit in the personal section or it would be awesome to add a custom widget to it as well, that kind of thing.

Since you keep ignoring me, I'll say it again.

Please add the feature to be notified if someone you watch is banned/deactivates.

Why would it matter, it's a lot like being blocked, once done there's nothing you can do about it. Once banned or deactivated you cant contact them or they you, or see their profie. Basically you're too late to do anything about it, so knowing is strictly informative and after the fact. So finding out two seconds past or two years past renders the same verdict. :?

Two things:

-I don't want to be surprised by it

-It makes it easier to make a dA memorial

Not to play the advocate here, but a message that they have been banned or deactivated is no less surprising than any other means of finding out. Either way is sudden and abrupt, but you're still rendered powerless to change the event, so finding out now or two years from now is no less of a surprise. The point I'm getting at here, is if there was a way for you to effect the event, then there would be a reason for you to know sooner than later. But their isnt so its a moot point really. And from an alternative perspective some bans are only temporary, and de activations can be reversed in their gory month. So I'm sure the person being banned would not want it advertised. And if a person gets deactivated by a hacker (happened to me once in an old account) they can still recover the account in the 30 day recovery window, and find their watchers have not all left them.

I know, I just don't want to click someone's page to talk and find a "This user is deactivated" message. I'd rather know before I try to PM someone or something.

One of my friends left, and I only found out because I tried to invite him to a group. ;>; I would have rather found out another way. In my opinion, finding out via nasty surprise is like a screamer video. Finding a notification saying "User deactivated" is like the user making a journal saying "DEACTIVATING!". It's still a bad surprise, but it's just........ easier to handle.

Yeah, I'd personally find the news no easier to take either way. But a friend should at least give a heads up to their fellow deviants. But some just don't, and that's more on them than dA to notify friends. I had a friend that dropped everyone on her watch except me and only gave me her new destination, she's done that twice now, and I'm still friends with the ones she left behind. It's sad but it's the way she is, she runs for no reason. And next time ill probably be among those left behind, so I quit following her, I figured she would know where to find me when shes done running. If you've been ditched by a friend or they were banned that's not your fault. If they are truly a friend they will know where to find you. And I hope they do, it's sad to lose a friend.

Suggestion:
Guys, I think you should really work on dA Portfolio. I have a need to quickly create a new portfolio and encountered some very irritating limitations.

Gallery name can have only 22 characters? Insufficient! And no international characters? Useless when I'm trying to give titles outside of English-speaking country (my case). Add file - only one by one from the computer - feels like a waste of time and resources! How about selecting more than one file? Or even drag and drop? Populating a gallery from uploaded images - again one by one. Adding artwork from your dA gallery or Portfolio storage - you can view maximum of 8 pics at each page. Good luck getting to what you need in a populous gallery. I'm a premium user and after I'm used to having 120 thumbnails on a page, this is more than constraining. It would also be useful to have a search box, so that you can quickly get to the deviation when you know its name.

dA portfolio is a very useful service, but improving on those things would make it much more so! Thanks!

Oh, and no auto save? Just lost an hour of work in 4 AM. Dang.

Btw another useful feature for the site would be to have the number of pages of comments displayed. So that I could know that to get to the end of the comments I'd have to click through 3 or 13 pages, for example, instead of clicking until I reach it.

Speaking of commissions...

Attention Please!

This is a critical situation here- =R-no71 is in a serious financial situation and could be kicked out of her home to the streets any day now. She's opened up commissions to pay for it and to save herself from having to live on the streets. Please, if anyone can, commission her. She has very high skilled and high quality artwork- you will not regret commissioning. Even if you can not commission, at least help her advertise. Do a good deed!: [link]

I think it isn't fair for people who have already paid to be beta testers to have part of their commission earnings taken from them. This widget should be available to all deviants, beta tester or not, and non-beta testers have the 20% taken but beta testers have none taken or only 10% taken.

A user requested a commission from me using the new widget. The notification appeared in my message center and I approved it (hit 'yes'). I inadvertently deleted the correspondence item. Where can I go to see who has given me points for commissions? The 'Transactions' section of the 'My Earnings' page only lists that 'Commission Profits' will clear in a few days, it does not list who gave me the points.

Adding to 1): There IS a link that seems like it should be leading to comments (it's currently displaying 'No Comments') but it leads me to a 'Forbidden' page, so I'm not sure if it's a bug or the feature simply hasn't been added yet...

I am liking the widget a lot so far, I've gone through with a good 5 commissions already now and it went pretty smoothly but there are two things that bother me:

1) You cannot comment on a commission request. That is awfully inconvenient because if I need to confirm certain things about the commission and ask for details I need to go to the commissioner and send them a note. It would be really lovely if it were possible to simply comment on the request in my inbox.

2) The fact that the sold counter resets even if I just add a different thumb as an example. I have been told via #devBUG that this is on purpose because the widget sees it as a new kind of commission but I believe that that's pretty weird because if I simply exchange one example image because I believe it represents the same kind of commission better I am not changing the commission itself whatsoever. Thus the sold counter resetting doesn't make sense for a change of that extent and distorts the number of commissions sold.

I was gonna say I want this for non-beta, but not if I have to pay you guys. If I could afford to give up 20% or even 10% of my profits, I'd pay to be a beta tester. I agree with everyone else. If I see someone with this widget, I'll send them a note if I want to commission them. This is bullshit. I'm like 80% over this site. Tumblr is 100% free for everyone, and so much more friendly.

So what's stopping the buyer from seeing the offer and then sending a good ol' comment/note/mail? It would also be in the seller's interest to encourage this behavior, as he would profit 20% more from it.

i have an idea: It would be nice for groups (ALL groups - super or non super) to have a points collector that can only be used to go SUPER. As soon as you get enough points, it would automatically give that group a Super group status and then the counter can just start over again. This would eliminate having to give points to a personal page and not know for sure that, that person will use the points for what they really say the are.
