Site Update: Improving More Like This

Thu Nov 29, 2012, 6:12 PM

In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Help Improve More Like This

In October, More Like This was launched to all Premium Members, with an additional limited preview open to all deviantART members. If you've used More Like This, you may have noticed that sometimes you might stumble upon results that aren't as accurate as other results. Today, we're giving the community the ability to improve those More Like This results!

While using More Like This, if you run into results that aren't as relevant as we'd like them to be, you'll see a small notice above those results. Click "help us improve these results" to begin teaching More Like This which results are more relevant.

This tool will present you with a starting deviation and two sets of results. After reviewing both sets, you can choose which set is more accurate, if they're both accurate, or if neither are accurate.

Your input on these tests will help us to provide an even better browsing experience through More Like This, and your help in doing so is greatly appreciated!

Be Vigilant of Phishing

Your account's security is of vital importance to deviantART and we're committed to providing our members with resources and advice on how to stay safe and secure online. To further these goals, we regularly enhance our security protocols and provide additional tools, such as the Sessions Manager, to help you maintain your account security. We recently experienced an incident involving phishing, a tactic by which individuals obtain account information using a false login screen, email, etc., which affected some users on site. As a result, we posted Be Vigilant of Phishing, an article detailing the incident and how to improve your account security.

Over the coming weeks, we will be posting additional articles on account security to #communityops, our Community Operations group. We encourage you to add that group to your deviantWATCH and to keep your eyes open for our safety and security blogs coming in the next few weeks. Remember, it's everyone's responsibility to ensure you have a safe and secure online experience.

Your Feedback

Thanks for the feedback left on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Several deviants were positive regarding a potential conversation view for Notes. Some deviants mentioned that they would like to see conversations organized based on the comment that starts the conversation, rather than by having all conversations with one person show up in one place.
  • Deviants were pleased about deviantART muro brush packs being made free for everyone.
  • Both suggestions included in last week's Site Update were met with agreement and support.
  • Deviants would like a tool to resize and rotate selections in deviantART muro. Suggested by bloominglove
  • Some deviants would like to be able to set drawings done in deviantART muro as their deviantID. (Thanks for bringing this up - we'll get this fixed!) Suggested by FadingNinja and notoriouslyMe
  • Deviants would like to search based on image sizes, similar to the way you can search by resolution or ratio. Suggested by petits-bonheurs
  • Some members would like a "Return to Top" button at the bottom of each page. Suggested by mnoruzi

Discuss! Comments
It's been a few weeks since we launched the new comments, and while we've seen deviants making use of it, we'd like to hear more feedback on it. If you haven't given the new comments a try yet, feel free to do so on this image!

How come I sometimes do see the link and other times I see a link to show from different artists (very handy) and sometimes I don't see any link but just the results?

I would like to add two improvement ideas to
First of all is SORTING option - either by date or by name.
Second - an iPhone/iPad app would be nice to have ;-)

Thanks for

Don't get me wrong guys, but what we actually need is support to html iframe, so we can upload interactive 3D models via P3D ([link]) or something like this...

Or we could have a DA proprietary mesh and textures uploader, with these same features for showing 3D sculptures and models :D

I guess I'll get referred to the help desk for this one but going to put it here any way since it includes a suggestion:

The Notes system could do with some improvements, namely making the space we have to compose the notes much much bigger - we have such a huge space to compose comments but for notes (which i find are usually much longer than my comments) we get half the width and are only able to see about 5 lines of type at a time. This is very frustrating.

Also with notes, I have noticed that notes i send to people from the button on their user pages don't show up in my sent notes folder. This too is annoying and it would be great if this could be fixed please.
ikazon Featured By Owner Dec 5, 2012   Writer
Thanks very much for the feedback! I'm gonna refer you to the Help Desk for that last bit, about notes sent from the Profile not showing up in the Sent Notes folder, since that should work normally, but the rest of it goes here, so thank you for the feedback. :)

I would like to make the sugestion up being able to upload photos directly onto the site since most phones can do the internet but there is no button to sumit when you go onto deviant art on a phone

i don't like they new search thingy
where each picture is there sure but you have to scroll thru every comment that was placed on that picture
i liked the old way of viewing it better
ikazon Featured By Owner Dec 5, 2012   Writer
Hey there! Sounds to me like you might have browsing set to Full View. On the top right side of the Browse page, there are three buttons that look like this. The left two are thumbnail options, and the third is Full View. If that's not the problem you're encountering, please take a screenshot of the problem you're having and send it to me! :)

What we need is a DA Mobile app!

Could someone please direct me to a post or journal or something that explains why the new submission page takes a half hour or longer to post, why I can't submit my deviation to any groups, and why it's just buggy in general?

Or am I asking for something that doesn't exist? Because I would love to see what the staff are doing to fix this new submissions page that we didn't need.
ikazon Featured By Owner Dec 5, 2012   Writer
Hey there! Part of the issue you're encountering may be that your browser is out of date (Firefox is currently on version 17, for example), which would prevent things from loading properly. Might want to update your browser, then give it another try. :)
Metros2soul Featured By Owner Dec 4, 2012  Hobbyist Filmographer
I'm having the same problem. Before I submitted something just fine, now I have 5 boxes of 'processing.' My picture uploaded, but I can't even see it! This is really getting on my nerves. What the heck are they doing now? Making more improvements to things that are FINE they way they are, I suppose.
yereverluvinuncleber Featured By Owner Dec 3, 2012  Professional Interface Designer
Most deviants who are testing the new submit page, don't like it and don't like being foisted into testing something that hasn't properly worked for 45 days...
CyberLogic Featured By Owner Dec 3, 2012
It's nice to receive Favourites and all, but personally I don't want them to appear in my Message Center. I'd rather that be reserved for comments. So would it be possible to add an option under Miscellaneous Settings to disable notifications for Favourites?

Something like THIS
CyberLogic Featured By Owner Dec 3, 2012
"I'd rather that be reserved for comments"

Oh and for Watchers too! I'd certainly want to know about them. :)

I hope you won't forget to include the mobile dA in these improvements.. really, the mobile dA now sucks as compared to as it was but I don't even know who or where to take my complaints about it.

I'm used to using psp whenever I go mobile dA and I think it was great (except the part that I can't send a note) but now, whenever I click on messages, I just go back to the previous page as if I only reloaded/refreshed the page, NOTHING IS VIEWABLE. Anybody can try it and see for themselves what I'm talking about.
I understand that psp might be a little "outdated" compared to the new age gadgets/cellphones but we are talking about a site here, it must be accessible to everybody because not everyone can afford expensive gadgets. I used to be active on DA but eversince the "improvement" on the mobile version, which sucks that caused my interest to wane, I seldom visit here anymore
Pokefan89 Featured By Owner Dec 3, 2012
i agree mobile dA needs some improvement. when i try to zoom in to select a category, i cannot scroll the category pop-up window across, so i have to zoom out and keep trying to hit the right category. and some way to rotate the uploaded image would be nice, my phone rotates pictures sometimes (i dont know why (s3)).
ShinigamiInc Featured By Owner Dec 3, 2012  Student General Artist
I have to admit the new ‘tumblr-style’ endless scroll is kind of annoying. Other than that everything is fine and I look forward to seeing the new changes.
KatieOsika Featured By Owner Dec 3, 2012  Student Digital Artist
if you scroll down to the bottom of the front page, there's a small gear right below the deviations. if you click the gear, you can switch it from endless-scrolling back to click-through-pages. I was glad they kept that, considering that I disliked the endless scrolling too
ShinigamiInc Featured By Owner Dec 5, 2012  Student General Artist
Oh I didn’t notice that thank you :D

I'm having problems when I want to submit something to a group. I can't see the options on the emergent window, just the window appears but I can't see anyithing inside of it.
TheRaiderInside Featured By Owner Dec 2, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I can't submit a deviation because when I select a category, it say's I didn't select one and I can't submit it without one!! DX
ikazon Featured By Owner Dec 5, 2012   Writer
Hey there! Are you still having this issue, and if so, what type of file are you trying to submit, and what category are you trying to submit to?
TheRaiderInside Featured By Owner Dec 5, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I'm trying to submit an film, I have selected a ton of categories too. It's really frustrating. I've seen others have the same problem, but they managed to fix it, but some how I can't. :(
ikazon Featured By Owner Dec 5, 2012   Writer
You have to apply for film privileges to submit film on deviantART, so if you haven't done so, then that'll be why you're unable to. :) FAQ #842: How do I become a submitting member of the film community?
Ride2Live-Live2Ride Featured By Owner Dec 2, 2012
YEESS!!!!! You fixed DA Muro's eraser!!

You're the best.

I hate the new gallery update! It is SO confusing!
kylesartaday Featured By Owner Dec 2, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
i think the portfolio tool needs improvement next, its such a handy tool and has so much potential, i feel the site would benefit alot from it =) however the recent updates are awesome =)
Sunnycat17 Featured By Owner Dec 2, 2012  Student Digital Artist
I think it would be nice to have an actual app for the iPhone/Android that lets us use deviantart from our phones.

While we can just access dA from the internet on our phones, fitting the website into phone format is, in my opinion, not a good idea.
Having an app with be a whole lot less laggy, and it would most likely even LOOK better.
I'd sure love to have an App for dA! It's my upmost favorite website to go to! :)

I also understand it will take a bit of time to develop the app for both operating systems, but if you guys like this idea, and say something about it, I can wait a while. :)

I'm glad the issue with site security is being addressed. Perhaps a cache system could be implemented to keep bots off the site?

And i see the submission page issue is still being ignored as usual...:iconsilverfacepalmplz:
RainingTeddyBears Featured By Owner Dec 2, 2012
Okay so I just submit something, got some favorites, all the normal stuff.
And I had 304 feedback at the time. I went to go check my gallery or something and I look back up at my messages and it went down to 302. I have a pretty bad memory but I'm positive I did not delete anything..
It did the same thing with most of my critique messages! I keep my critique messages in my inbox so I know what I need to improve on and how, but they get randomly removed. I know I can just go through my gallery to read them but I don't keep track of which critiques are on what deviations.

Also there's the whole submission page issue. It works for me fortunately, but I'd like it better if you could type the description BEFORE you choose a file to submit. I don't know if I'm the only one who does this but I like typing the description before I actually start making the picture. But it's only a suggestion, I don't mind if you can't do that. xD
Sunnycat17 Featured By Owner Dec 2, 2012  Student Digital Artist
Are you the admin of a group at all?
Just a question.
RainingTeddyBears Featured By Owner Dec 2, 2012
I'm the co-founder of a group and a contributor of another, is that affecting anything?
Sunnycat17 Featured By Owner Dec 2, 2012  Student Digital Artist
Yes actually. Because requests will be sent to submit a deviation, and if someone else votes "Yes", accepting the deviation, it should take it off your inbox number I believe, but still show it in your group inbox.

I might be wrong, but that's most likely the that happens with me.
RainingTeddyBears Featured By Owner Dec 3, 2012
Well in my group the deviations are automatically accepted, same with member requests, so that doesn't change anything does it?
Sunnycat17 Featured By Owner Dec 3, 2012  Student Digital Artist
Then I don't know, sorry.
emoheartsforever Featured By Owner Dec 2, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
i have a problem with the submissions:
whenever i click the submission button it takes me right back to the main page. i have tried all the different submission buttons and each one does this...
am i the only one having this problem?
ive asked some friends and it doesnt happen to them, so im not completely sure what is going on
ikazon Featured By Owner Dec 5, 2012   Writer
Hey there! What operating system and browser do you use when trying to upload?
Joerg-Lingnau Featured By Owner Dec 2, 2012
automatically filling in keywords from IPTC or XMP when submitting (removing existing ";" or "," since usually they are separated by those signs)
GirlWithTheGreenHat Featured By Owner Dec 2, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
Submission page is still a mess.
derbluthund Featured By Owner Dec 2, 2012  Hobbyist Photographer
An 'official' DeviantArt android app would be nice rather than various third party ones (I have not found an 'official' one yet - please inform me if I am wrong). Some in-protest photography work I do instantly on Android, and being able to upload the image into DeviantArt from one's phone after sending it out would be nice.

I am sometimes dubious about using third party apps because of how malware might be including (inc phishing for your account details, etc). Plus adverts. Ugh. I would put up with DeviantArt store ads in an official app, though...
