In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

New Beta Tester Features: Site Navigation, Activity Feeds & Status Updates

Three major changes to the way the deviantART works have just been launched to some of our Beta Testers! We’re pleased to announce the beta release of a redesigned site navigation and two entirely new features — Activity Feeds and Status Updates — bringing exciting new options to deviantART’s browsing and sharing experience.

Watchable Collections are Coming

As part of the new Activity Feed feature that's been released to our Beta Testers, Collections can now be watched, and will display on the Activity Feed when deviations are added to them. Watching deviants' Favourites has been a long-requested feature, and we're happy to offer a new way to discover art!

If you’d prefer not to have a Collection displayed in other deviants' Activity Feeds, simply visit that Collection, click the "Collection Options" button in the top right, and select the "Disable watching" checkbox (unwatchable Collections are still displayed on your Favourites page).

Site Outages

Over the past weekend, some users' access to the site was inconsistent. Our team of developers were aware and working on this situation as it was ongoing, and we apologize for any inconvenience during the outages.

Please keep an eye on our Status Forum for updates about happenings like these. Our Help Desk team posts regularly about outstanding issues, so you can easily see if an issue you're encountering is one that we're already aware of. Thank you!

Change Log

  • When adding or editing tags, the input box would not always recognize keyboard controls. It now recognizes these controls, and will also react to highlighting text via mouse click, making everything selected editable. Fixed by szlosek
  • The autocomplete menu for tags on the Submit page would sometimes stall on "Searching...". Fixed by kemayo
  • Literature deviations created more than a year ago and edited with a new version could still contain an older draft of the work instead of the current version, when selecting "Download". Fixed by trezoid

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of the commentary you left for us:
  • In response to the Discuss topic, generally deviants mentioned that they don't comment on Collections made by other deviants.
  • Deviants who have commented on Collections said it was usually to thank the person for adding their art to their Collection, moreso than to comment about the Collection itself.
  • Deviants liked the suggestion that the tag input field could have a "Recently Used Tags" menu.

Discuss!

Honestly, I think the majority of updates are unnecessary and actually making the navigation worse for people. First of all, I was never really a fan of the "more like this" feature and I know I'm not the only one with this opinion given that there are many journals that explain how to "disable" it, at least through the browser. I came across this journal after looking for an explanation about the "featured in collections" tab. I believe that a feature like this is redundant because there is already an option to look at the list of favorites in the deviation info. The problem primarily with "more like this is" is that often the art suggested has little to no connection to an image, and to be frank, tends to offer links from generally acceptable art to "borderline pornography." If these are to be features, the least that could be done is allow the option for users to disable and/or hide the tabs.

What is this ****? How do you disable "watch feed" and make "browse" my main homepage again -_- ?

Hi there! If you click on Browse when on the homepage, it should retain that when you visit the homepage in the future. :)

I can't help but feel the new version from the screenshot posted makes deviantART look far less professional. It seems pretty much like any old social networking site now, when it used to be much more elegant.
I'd really like a way to be able to toggle which browsing method I'd like to use, since I don't really like the cheesy look of the whole thing, and I prefer the simpler and easier to navigate front page

Will there be a way to revert the browsing to the previous version?
For some reason I can see this updated version even though I'm not a beta tester, and I would prefer to have the original.

It seems this update is far better suited to the mobile deviantART and not desktop. The original was far easier for me to navigate and I (and probably many others) would probably like to have the option to revert it to the original

Will they allow us to customize this feature,
I've put it to the back and am just looking
at it often, but wouldn't put it on the profile
as of now. A like button would be awesome!

I noticed that too, but I've managed to find a way around that. Just copy the URL and copy it onto a note or something, any empty document that won't upload the thumb will do, and then just copy in everything except the "http://"-part. Then you add the "http://" part on your own. It's a bit "messy"(?), but it works.

And until it's fixed, I guess we'll have to make do with whatever works.

There is an easier one. Just copy and paste the link in HTML-mode (available by pressing Crtl+E).

Copy the URL, then activate the text-field (in your journal, comments etc) and press Ctrl+E - the editor will change to HTML-mode. Paste the URL there and press the Ctrl+E again.

Generally I really like the changes made so far. Bit confusing first, but I got used to it and have to say it keeps stuff organized better than before. But I still have my problems with the activity feed. I like the feature itself, but it gets pretty crowed, since every submission of every group I'm part of as well as anything else I already have in my inbox gets huddled there as well, so I fear to miss the real important things people I watch might post. So I would wish to either have my inbox on the one hand and the activity feed on the other with all those possibilities my inbox doesn't have (like being updated on the fave collections and such, as well as the posts), or to have an option that would allow me to personalize the content that is shown in the feed (like to be able to turn off certain contents I already have better oganized in my inbox so I can have a more focused overview). For me at the moment it is annoying to scroll through hundreds of group submissions I might already have cleared in my inbox just to know whether there was something important I wouldn't want to have missed like livestreams, etc.... I really don't want to unwatch group submissions just to keep the activity feed organized.
But other than that thanks for your continous effort to improve this site! I like it :)

I wish the "Why I'm here" tab in profiles returned. I didn't notice when it was taken off, but I don't think it was a bad feature.

Under your avatar in the "About" section you can edit, you used to be able to answer the question "Why am I here" and pick many options (ex: to make friends, to market my art, etc.)

I SERIOUSLY encourage a recently used tags update.... i hate the new tagging system enough already, but mainly because I have to type in EVERYTHING each time, and it doesn't give me a good suggestion until I'm half way finished with the word.. another problem is that it used to remember all the things you put in the tag box. I will use an example

say I upload pictures of Puppies all the time. then in my tag box it used to just remember everything I ever tagged in a puppy picture, such as "puppy dog cute adorable sweet pup doggie photo photograph Todo  Rat Terrier" but now I have to try and remember all the names they have for dogs and re-type things like cute and adorable... it's a hassle I used to be so glad I didn't have to go through, and also I may forget a good key word tag now.

give us a star :star: rating system :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: (say between 1-5) for "faving" or how much we like a photo/image as an alternative/option to collection 100s of favs in Folders we may or may not use/revisit ;) .... on the deviants image, a total stars could be shown, as each viewer/watcher marks their Rating .... ?????

I think the watchable collections thingy is interesting. But I'd be more interested in being able to watch specific folders in deviants' actual galleries (instead of their favorites). Sometimes people do many different things, in several different techniques, or really diverse fanart. And not always we want to watch them and see eeeverything they do in our feeds. I see many people end up creating multiple accounts for their different interests and works in different mediums. It'd be easier if, having everything in one account, people could check/uncheck what folders or what specific categories of our work they want to watch.

Me too. I'm so waiting for this. Sometimes people have one specific project I'm totally interested or just like you say people with many different styles. Would really help to stay focused on the art they do and give it more attention.

I like the Browse options.

However:

Having the DDs disappear like the dodo to the doldrums of a dropdown is a bad idea-just get rid of them if you don't want them anymore. I will miss having them at the bottom of the page.

I don't want people watching everything I do. Any option to opt out, including activity feed?  I shan't be using it.

Having people's faves etc in our messages should be hidden by default, not opt in.  It's like the Like button on Fakebook.  Looks like we're in for more spam.

Having comments rated is also a bad idea; it more open to cyberbullying.

Just like Fakebook, you're requiring us to waste our time sorting out privacy settings on EVERYTHING. That's why I hardly use FB anymore.

... We already get an activity feed in the messages center. Is it staying there? No? Why not? Is this merely a relocation of the watch feed into a new feed that requires us to click on another page?

And, echoing everyone else: please no statuses. I come here for art, not to socialize.

Suggestions:

- Ability to search notes. (Usernames, keywords, etc.)
- Ability to search favourites.
- Subfolders in favourites for members who want to keep their collections organized.
- Some form of control over the MLT section. (Roulette, hiding it, etc.)
- Allow users to switch between keywords and hashtags.

Still waiting for the option to search our favorites. It would be VERY useful for people who want to organize their favorites into folders and I can't imagine it being that hard to put in. We already have search the site, search our gallery, why not search favorites/collections??

^ 1UP! well said I agree. Sometimes when I'm painting and I want to remember a part of another piece, or see a painting and want to compare, or just want to recommend to someone a piece, it takes forever to find it in my favs. This function would be most helpful. Thanks

^ Unhelpful.            "...rather than your paltry 28"  Hmm, now isn't that just a bit rude?  People who have no legs find wheelchairs most useful, as well as those with one leg. People with two broken legs, or perhaps a single broken leg. Maybe they are pregnant, suffer abdominal pain, or even a sprained ankle - all could find good use of the wheelchair and just because one finds it more useful, it does not take away the usefulness for others that may not find it as useful. So be it 1000 pages 290, 30, or 10....I think it would be useful for all them :)
