In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback.

Like last week's update, this week's Site Update is a little different from usual in that we don't have a publicly visible change log. However, it's for a good reason. Our Devious Technology team is currently at a staff retreat working on upcoming projects, such as...

Tags are the new Keywords

As deviantART grows and strives to create new ways to discover great content, we’ve found that keywords as we currently use them have become underutilized. We think we can do better -- and can make a better experience for the community -- by making some changes.

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of the feedback you left for us:
  • In response to the Discuss topic, generally deviants said they don't use social login options when the option is available, though some deviants said that they find it convenient depending on the website.
  • Some deviants mentioned that they might use social login options on deviantART provided they could continue to log in with username and password, while other deviants said they would choose not to use them.
  • Some commenters noted that they would like to use deviantART to log in to other apps, similar to how one can access SketchBook Pro or the Madefire Motion Book Tool with a deviantART account.
  • CrypticGrin suggested that some deviants would like to be able to easily share their artwork to their other social pages from the Submit page as they submit it to deviantART.

Please make showing the tags on artwork optional. There's so much stuff around the artwork already.

Also, some things have several "most common" search names so there will be too many tags needed. And I have noticed that many people use the wrong word for something I often draw, and I would like to be able to add that wrong tag to my deviations without everyone thinking that I don't know the right word.

I have quite a lot of Sailor Moon fanart and most people and things there have different names in the US so those names are very common for people to use, but the original names are common too so I'd have to use both. I really don't want to clutter my deviation pages with 17+ tags just because I have drawn all the main people of the Dark Kingdom/Negaverse, but I do want to use all those as keywords :(
When it comes to fanart of that show, most people have favourite characters so they'll search for his/her name and not just the name of the show since that will bring up billion images showing characters they don't like at all.

The choice to click Public or Private when we submit would be very appreciated! :)

Not sure if this is the right spot to leave feedback on the "Manage Deviation Tags" page, but here goes anyway ;)

It would be fantastic if we were either able to search for deviations on the page or sort by category. With over 800 deviations (including journals, obviously) it is pretty much impossible to do this in any way time effective.

Tags are not working for me.  The only thing that works is to add the keywords to the description.

Hi, I have searched my art using my keywords/tags and my images don't come up. So not much chance of sales there. eg. "seascape" traditional art/paintings/landscape and scenery and my image does not appear. I edited my prints and made sure the keywords were there and spaced, all looks fine but not working. Am I missing something when setting up for selling prints? Thanks

Hello..  a question about tagging images with search criteria.

When I tag images it breaks up names / series name / related tags into separated words.. so say I have a character name "Motoko Kusanagi", I write it and it splits the tag into 2 search criteria instead of one word.. so it becomes one tag of "Motoko" and another of "Kusanagi".. when I save the post, then go back into edit all the tags I've entered are jumbled up and not in order of what I entered them as.. the Name I entered becomes disconnected from itself with other search criteria in between the name.

How are we meant to tag on deviantart? do we need to tag something like this Motoko_Kusanagi ?

On tumblr for instance.. or pixiv, it does not function like this.. but on dA a space makes it split the word.

What is the correct method for tagging on deviantArt?

This new system is confusing, the tags are arranged randomly. And much worse: My latest deviation cannot be found using the tags. It is simply not showing up. I really hope this is not permanent.

This Tagging System is only making Searching for Art more complicated on DA.
As some note about, you may need to search for various ways to phrase something, and there are some who like to place various keywords for various reasons.
Like hidden meanings or items similar to that.

It is also making Search difficult, as the only way I can find what I am looking for is by someone mentioning it in the Description!

Who was complaining about the Keyword System?
This Tag system only makes things more complicated than they need to be.

Can it please be possible to at least give us the option of using Keywords and not force us to use Hashtags?

I honestly thought I'd be the only one who hates the new tagging-thing. But it seems I was wrong.

In other words; fuck the hash-tags, man, it makes the tagging so much more harder.

I know you guys are not going to delete it now, but can you at least make it so that it lets you use spaces in one tag? Would make a lot of people happy. Including me.

K' thanks bye.

As somewhat of a new Deviant member here, I prefer the old keyword system. This new tagging system has drastically changed in so many ways, in comparison to the old one. Firstly, I don't like the restriction of "no spaces" between the tags. As of now, it's really confusing how the tags are displayed, they're all cramped together and causes confusion. I understand how this new system works, for example what used to be the keyword "digital art" would now have to be the tag "#digitalart". It just doesn't fit with DeviantArt, I believe.

Another thing, discovering new art has now become far more difficult. I'm not sure whether to type into the search bar "my little pony" or "mylittlepony" or even "my_little_pony". And cause of this, people have confusion when searching and discovering art. This is kinda of a drawback for new artists who want a little exposure. I used to receive a decent number of views and maybe some faves in my drawings from random people who stumbled on my work while browsing. Now with this new tagging system, I noticed that my recent works are not receiving the same views or feedback I used to have with the old "keyword" system. I also don't get relevant art I try to search up when using the tags in the search bar. I even tried many tests with these tags, and could not find my work while searching for it. It's just too confusing for me, and I believe for other as well.

I really hope this doesn't get implemented permanently. Reading these other comments, I can tell people including myself, prefer the old "keyword" system over the "tags". Appreciate whoever took the time to read this large comment.

The new tagging feature is the single most annoying change I have ever seen on deviantART! This is not twitter or tumblr or facebook where people just tag a couple key words to reveal a deeper intent behind their post. I have nothing against being able to use hashtags but it's not something that should ever be mandatory! Hashtags simply do not suit this site.
I severely hope that this is something that will eventually be changed back...

Not a fan of the new tagging system. Often feels like I'm 'over-tagging' something, because of all the variations/combinations of words I have to enter, just to feel like I'm categorizing my piece properly. Also, my browser memorizing multiple tags made it a lot easier when submitting something that fell under a similar category, but now it's just a hassle to upload and tag anything. Reverting to the old tagging system would be preferable.

New system for tags requires too many key strokes and there isn't any memory which was useful for similar postings.
I hate it.
Not all improvements are and this isn't an improvement.

Honestly, if you guys are going to use this new tagging system, then I'll just stick to using tumblr. I have an art blog on there and the tags actually allow spaces in the tags. Until deviantart either allows spaces in the tags or changes the tagging system back to how it used to be, then I'll just be on tumblr because I don't want to use this dumb no-space tagging thing like instagram. The only reason why I'll be here is to do commissions and nothing else, my personal art won't be up so much so there'll be a lot less activity from me.

Hate these :/
my browser use to "save/remember" tags i used so if i was uploading alot of images with the same tags it would be right there with a click or couple letter types.. having to type out each one is stupid over and over and editing them sucks.. also noticed if something like a name with a - is added it takes the - out.. also noticed -s mysteriously being removed from journals and stuff. i hope this is a glitch cuz its changing peoples names and not allowing them to link

back on topic these new tags or what ever make me not want to ever use tags anymore. sorry.. plus if the go public that's a super big turn off.

These new tags suck.  Nothing pulls up right and it takes forever to tag things this way.

I pretty much stick to one medium, my lego sculptures. But when it comes time to branch out into other mediums like taking photography more seriously, or digital drawing and photo editing. I'm definitely going to ask my friends and more experienced people I follow what they use and why.

I am definitely NOT in favor of the new tagging system. At least being able to type a phrase all together would be helpful instead of every single word separated, it frustrates me greatly and takes me longer to tag my deviations. I miss the fact that I used to be able to type one word and all my previous tags would pop up so I would save on time with the tags and maybe only have to change or add  one word. The new system is more difficult to use and the hashtags are an eyesore.

I will make note that a share to a social website while it gives the source of the art would be amazing for tumblr users. Especially help to get rid of thieves. (Make the button optional of course)

You can share Yahoo articles to tumblr, why not deviant art works to tumblr. Help expose the artist if you like them.

I usually hear it by word of mouth, through my arty friends and also my tech head friends.
I tend to avoid going away from the industry standard ( for example if it aint photoshop i am probably not going to like it/use)
But in saying that i am always open to trying new programs, and i look for functionality and practicality. functionality being how they work and how that affects my workflow, and then practicality being how easy is it too use is it easy to find things you need in the menu etc etc.

i woudl be SO much more accepting of it i would be if you didnt FUCK up all my other pictures like you did. i dont have the TIME or the PATIENCE to redo the tags of 448 pictures >.>

Usually I found out via other artists when they repost things on Facebook, DA or twitter! As far as a new tool, I tend to look for reviews from fellow artists who've used it. I rely a lot on reviews and then write my own after trying it out :)
