In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

This Deviant Watches You

A new feature has been added to the Profile Pages of deviants who watch you! When visiting another person's profile, a "Watches You" bubble will now appear next to their +Watch button if they are watching you.

The ability to see if a deviant is watching you is a feature that has been requested frequently in the past by deviants, and it was rated highly on the new Suggestion Forum. We are happy to implement this feature and we hope it'll give more context to your relationships with other deviants.

Help Desk Closure, July 4th and 5th

In honor of Independence Day in the United States, the Help Desk will be closed on Thursday, July 4th and Friday July 5th. We'll be back to our normal business hours on Monday, July 8th. Please keep in mind that due to this extended weekend, there will be response delays upon reopening, while we catch up from the weekend's tickets.

Change Log

  • Removing a deviation from a Group would not work properly when the deviation was in more than 8 groups. Fixed by muteor
  • Mobile support has been improved for Microsoft touch devices. Fixed by muteor
  • The "Browse", "Scrapbook" and Search options when in a deviant's Gallery were briefly broken. Fixed by shadowhand
  • When editing one's Channels, the Categories menu could not be accessed properly. Fixed by iconocrash

  • Ctrl+A (Command+A, for Mac users) would not highlight text when editing a layer's name. Fixed by mudimba / Submit

  • An odd outline would appear when creating a new stack. Fixed by drommk
  • Group-exclusive submissions that were scheduled would wrongfully be added to that deviant's Gallery. Fixed by drommk

  • If the last remaining tab was a successfully published scheduled item, resetting/closing the tab wouldn't work. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When selecting files from on the Submit page, holding ctrl (command for Mac) and clicking would not invert the selection state of that file without affecting the rest of the selection. Fixed by drommk
  • Holding shift and clicking when selecting files from on the Submit page will now add clicked files to the selection. Fixed by drommk Writer

  • deviantART muro redraws that were embedded into a Writer document would link to the current document instead of playing. Fixed by kemayo
  • Icon codes and other deviantART formatting didn't display properly when copied and pasted. Fixed by kemayo and Alisey
  • In some instances, Writer wouldn't break long words, causing page width issues. Fixed by inazar
  • When leaving comments in (or elsewhere on site, for Beta Testers), the Writer sidebar allowed text selection, making dragging thumbnails difficult. Fixed by kemayo
  • Writer in comments was not launched on the forums for Beta Testers. Fixed by inazar
  • The thumb limit for images in comments could be bypassed by clicking rapidly. Fixed by kemayo
  • Clicking between multiple comment boxes on a page could cause the Add Media sidebar to close. Fixed by inazar
  • The "Add a Drawing" button would reappear if you clicked to leave a comment, clicked elsewhere, and then clicked back to that comment box. Fixed by inazar
  • When leaving a comment using Writer, switching to or from HTML mode by using ctrl+E would shrink the comment box. Fixed by inazar

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Deviants liked the updated appearance of the Twitter widget, but several deviants voiced concern regarding the amount of page space images in the widget took up.
    • We have opted to remove images from the Twitter widget in response to the concern voiced by deviants, as well as to help ensure that content displayed on Profile Pages meets deviantART's Terms of Service and Etiquette Policy. Twitter icons will still display, as per Twitter's branding guidelines.

Linking Usernames
You can link to deviants in Journals, comments and most other places on deviantART by using the :dev: and :icon: codes. Do you find these methods easy to use, or would you prefer a tool that autocompletes usernames as you type them?

really good improvement ;)

I'm not a big fan of the change in creating links.

It was fantastic when I was able to write in a link and then it would be displayed as {Link} or it would be a written message instead of just {Link}; it got rid of that messy URL scribble in journals and comments.

This page talks about the different ways to create links on DA and I really loved using those methods, it looked so neat and tidy - I sure wish it was brought back.

The ''Watches you'' is awesome! You just made my life easier! Thank you! :D
Valz138 Featured By Owner Jul 15, 2013
About linking usernames, I think that the :dev: and :icon: codes work well (once one finds out that there are such codes XD But the Faq section explains it perfectly, so it's OK).
About suggestions, I'd like a sort of "visitors" widget for Journals, or, better, to know whether visitors are from dA or not (many deviants keep their status anonymous, but I think a difference can be made between members and non-members), and also the possibility to know who installs Journal Skins.
TFSyndicate Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2013  Student General Artist
I'd like to register a complaint (and I have some people to back me up in a forum). I don't remember exactly when you put journals into the mainstream search engine, and honestly, I feel that was a bad move. A very move.

People who come to DeviantArt are here to see art, not silly blog entries with nothing in them.

Why don't you just let the journals have their own thing, like the groups and prints?
Dee-Artist Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2013  Student General Artist
Hey, is there a way to reupload a file? Because there's a deviation I wanna make changes to.
ikazon Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2013   Writer
Hi there! You can change the main file of a deviation by editing that deviation, then clicking the pencil button in the top right of the Edit page and selecting "Change main file". Hope that helps! :)
Dee-Artist Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2013  Student General Artist
Well I tried that before but it didn't work. Maybe I'll try it again.
ikazon Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2013   Writer
If it's not working for you, then please file a bug report about it at the Help Desk about it, okay?
Dee-Artist Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2013  Student General Artist
It's fine. It worked.^^ Guess I was doing something wrong last time.
SailorCross Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2013
Hey is it possible to minimize the Writer tool bars on the journals? I find the one on the right rather annoying to look at. Or could I at least get a button to turn them off in case I want them?

Hey dA updatey people? I have a question... So I was in my and there was a picture I wanted to delete, right? So I clicked on the delete button, but it didn't delete. I clicked it again and it didn't delete. Again, and it didn't. I didn't realize until it was too late, though, that when I clicked delete on that one picture, it deleted three other folders of mine full of pictures, yet it didn't delete the picture I was originally trying to delete. I'm afraid if I try again it'll delete even more important folders. Do you know why it's doing this or how to get the other pics back? <:,,c

Oh and in custom folder layouts, if you have a Journal in there that contains thumbs, the first thumb is desplayed in the background of the Journal's position and the text is going down twice as long as it should. Kinda disturbing. No idea whether that's a firefox problem or a bug. At least it's not a problem of my custom layout, because it's just recently looking like that.

Linking Usernames:

I would prefer a tool since I always forget the codes and have to look it up XD
Ilionej Featured By Owner Jul 10, 2013  Student General Artist
Nice changes, thank you!

I personally don't mind an autocomplete, as long as it doesn't pop up wrongly. (But as with anything new, there'll always be those nasty bugs, right? ;) )

What I would like to see is that Journals are not count as Deviations anymore.
To provide myself as an example, I just noticed that I have 118 Journals and 309 Deviations(Scraps included? :?). The stats on my profile page state that I have 426 Deviations up(isn't there an arithmetical error as well? ). That might make people think I have submitted more than 400 works, whereas it is a hundred less. :hmm:
PHENlX Featured By Owner Jul 10, 2013  Student General Artist
I'm seeing a lot of people thinking that autocomplete would erase using the :dev: and :icon: codes, but if I understand correctly what $wreckling has said, you will actually do this-

Start typing the username- :devphen
And then a dropdown menu (similar to the notes one) would come down and you could select the appropriate username rather than typing the rest, or just continue to type until it's done and there's no suggestions.
So, you could just click on my username, and =PhenixFyre is finished and the link is completed. Nothing more.

I personally don't see how this could cause any problems.

It's not automatically linking all the usernames, and you still use the :dev: and :icon: codes, so it's purposeful. You have to mean to link it. There's no problems there. It's just a shorter way of what we're doing!

I like it myself. There are a ton of usernames out there that have odd spelling (like mine) or lots of letters or numbers or words or whatever. It's hard to remember.
And don't throw out the "why don't you just copy and paste?" because generally, if I'm on that person's page already, I could just look at the spelling. Oftentimes, I'm just listing them for some random reason or specifically trying to get to their profile. Hence, copy and paste just won't cut it.
haldron Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2013

Trust me, nothing's more embarrassing than linking to the wrong person's username. =P Or even worse, totally failing so the :dev: code doesn't bring up anything at all!

...ok well, there are probably a ton of things that are more embarrassing. But you get my point.

Can i ask what is happening with the group galleries, i've just noticed that all the insides of folders that used to display are not gone??  Is this a change you guys have made??
haldron Featured By Owner Jul 10, 2013
This should be fixed. :)
xXunovianXx Featured By Owner Jul 10, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I agree! I find this a bother too. It`s just the featured folder displaying at the main gallery page and not anything else. I really liked the format before, and I hope that you didn't change that.
Katy-L-Wood Featured By Owner Jul 9, 2013  Student General Artist
The :dev: and :icon: tags are perfect and autocomplete is one one the most annoying things in existence in my opinion. I really hope you guys don't move forward with that idea.
KeinZantezuken Featured By Owner Jul 9, 2013

I have a suggestion.

Wat if Deviant's could change the color of their Profile Page....?
They could change it from DeviantArt Green, to Picture Pink (being creative with names lol)
They could change the Journal Box Color too, like say they dont want everything to be just one color,
they could have options like: Backround, Journal, etc.

I'm pretty sure this has been a popular request, but idk if u guys wanna do it, but it would be AWESOME.

Now if only you'd consider making optional, you'd be well away. I decide where I should upload stuff, that decision shouldn't be made for me. Everything I try to upload goes there instead of to dA directly. Kindly please fix it, give us the option to disable it, or switch it off altogether :D One of the three would be really good right now, see here for why: [link]

Let the 'Watches You' drama begin. :iconpopcornplz:

Thoughts on username autocomplete:
Perhaps you can have it like facebook where it suggests names from those you have as friends/are watching? Otherwise it might fill in users with common words in their name (like mine) that you don't know. I mean, those that you are actively watching are the ones that you are most likely to mention.
Otherwise, as long as you keep allowing me to choose between a hyperlink and an icon when linking a user, I am happy.
Daghrgenzeen Featured By Owner Jul 8, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
Autocompleting usernames plz.
AmaTae Featured By Owner Jul 8, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
As far as the linking usernames....I remember when I was first starting DA I didn't know the shortcuts for usernames. However, I wouldn't like an auto complete feature as it may not only bog the site down but even in notes I find it a smidge irritating.

My suggestions is mayhaps adding it to the media sidebar? Perhaps putting a button there that when clicked would put the appropriate dev or icon code in the typing area much like the way the emotes work....?

it would be great to have the "people who watch me" on a list you could just summon, like the one of people who faved one of your artworks.
for me that would make more sense than randomly noticing that bubble on peopleīs page - i hardly browse pages of people. (this is more of a fun supplement)

the-Loony Featured By Owner Jul 9, 2013  Student General Artist
;P thatīs not all the people who watch me tho ^^ only those whom i or who have me tagged as a friend
micahgoulart Featured By Owner Jul 9, 2013  Hobbyist Photographer
That's everyone who watches you. Compare the total on that page to this page's total:
the-Loony Featured By Owner Jul 10, 2013  Student General Artist
doesnīt work out. i have more friends than people watching me. =O itīs a match with the people I watch tho.

i was thinking, that to be on that list, either one of us, me or the watcher, had to tick "friends" when confirming the watch.

this is very screwed up. x)
