New Username Symbols

With 13,000 new deviants joining deviantART each day, we want to ensure everyone's user experience is seamless. A common question from new and old deviants alike is: "What do username symbols mean?" Over the years, as we’ve surveyed deviants, we’ve found that very few understand symbols.

As part of our ongoing process to make the user experience cleaner and more intuitive, we've launched a new set of username symbols designed to help easily identify deviant-types.

Deviant and Art Mentions: Connecting People

DeviantART is a massive community, with 1.5 million comments contributing to inspirational and stimulating conversations each day. With the sheer amount of interaction taking place at any given time, we want to ensure you can make the most of your conversations, drawing friends in and bringing people together.

Mentions are a new, highly requested feature that notifies you when you are mentioned or featured by other deviants! In addition, you can now link to deviants by using the @ symbol!

Improvement to Artists View on More Like This

When browsing by Artists while viewing More Like This results, you will now see a cleaner layout that places more focus on the art, making it easier than ever for you to get lost in a world of art and artists that interest you.

Updated Internal and External Links

Links on deviantART have been updated to be clearer! Links to other deviantART pages can now be distinguished by their bold, dark-blue color, while external links are darker and have an arrow indicating you are leaving deviantART. This distinction is to clarify when a link leads outside of deviantART, helping to ensure that your experience on deviantART is a safe and pleasant one.

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say:
 • In response to the Discuss topic, several deviants mentioned that they had never changed a Group's Gallery settings, but the deviants who had changed settings mentioned that the process was not what they would consider easy.
 • Some deviants mentioned that they don't like getting Correspondence messages for events that are auto-approved.
 • Deviants would find it helpful if thumbnails in Correspondence messages were larger. Suggested by joeyh3 and WhiteDiamondsLtd

I have a questions, so, we're reached by mentions the first time of submission in a deviation/journal, but will we be reached again when they notify watchers of the same deviation/journal?
Thanks :la:

Hi there! Mentions are only sent on first publishing, so there won't be another mention sent if you update a deviation. :)

I think the new symbols are more creative and beautiful :) . However, I think mentions would generate fights between users (and one of the things I want to avoid the most is precisely that, having unwanted trouble with other DA users)

Yeah that can be true but you can say the same to comments, notes, critiques(if accepted and shown) ect. I think mentions are an overall great feature! Plus, it really dis encourages (in my opinion) people who just want to gossip about other WITHOUT. A fight and being noticed uvu

This is completely unrelated to Username Symbols and Mentions, but I'm not sure how to contact dA's administrators otherwise, so sorry...but there's a slight problem with Submitting Art. When it asks you to select a category, the scroll bar doesn't show up; for example, when you go to Literature -> Poetry -> Select Genre, I can only see the list until "Romantic" and nothing else.

Now since we have mentions, we get these assholes who abuse the mention feature. I really REALLY think there should be an option to turn them off.

The new way links are displayed with the arrow pointing out is really distracting and I think frankly unnecessary. I liked it better when outgoing links just said [link]. It saved a lot of space. As well as now in journals when you have buttons with outgoing links the buttons become larger and change the aesthetic flow of the journal. It really just doesn't look good.

I think the symbols should be put before the deviant usernames, in keeping with the previous format.

Aesthetically, your eyes go to the icon first, and then back to the user's name. It's visually distracting, and there's no flow. Because usernames are different lengths, it's aesthetically messy, and I think a bit of a back step of dA's visual appeal.

Regular, non-paying members are also feeling like "nobodies" and are feeling undervalued without a symbol, which isn't in keeping with the community spirit of deviantart. I think this has been a serious oversight.

I do like the symbols, and as I said, I particularly like the volunteer heart, which I think it's a really nice tribute for what the volunteers do for dA.

Thats a good point maybe they can make them a diff color but I like the positioning. If you are looking at the front of the name it doesn't guide you to the art below it. I tend to get distracted so in my opinion it has a good flow to it.

As a personal preference, I prefer them before the username. I think the text that comes with the hover is really helpful, especially for new deviantart members :) Really like the volunteer heart, I think it's a really nice tribute for what the volunteers do for dA.

(ive asked the same question on $Heidi's journal )

That's strange ... I've always thought 'til Hell Freezes Over (PTHFO) was really until Hell Freezes Over not 7 years :( (Sad)
Anyway... That's a really good improvement IMO and it's kinda refreshing even if I always missed the old one Shrug

But it's kinda sad that we can't choose our symbol when, like me, we are a senior (Past Volunteers(/Staff?) in fact) and a PTHFO (beta or not), I would love to swap between this sexy orange flame and my captain' symbol :D (Big Grin) Giggle

In which case to two flames will be used ? (as you can't be a PTHFO without beeing a senior ... )
Also there's no more the symbol and the + one ? they are consider as staff or senior now like +ekud or matteo?

Anyway awesome job :highfive:

I despise the arrows that are now next to all outgoing links. They are ugly and completely screw with many journal skins and profile pages that have customized their widgets. It is not seamless, it is not better. It is hideous. And honestly what's the point? You guys already have that page that interrupts people going to another site from this one, so why on earth do you need an obnoxious arrow next to external links as well? Do you think we're all stupid and won't hit the back button if we don't want to leave DA? This change is incredibly demeaning and insulting to the intelligence of all of your users, as we are not five years old and can easily tell when we are about to leave the site. It is not a matter of safety as you claim, it is a matter of not wanting people to go elsewhere.

"Wait, stop, you're about to leave our site! Don't go, stay I beg you, spend your money here, spend your life here, don't leave, come back!!!" *throws temper tantrum*

This is what DA sounds like to me with all these 'wait you're leaving our site!' warnings, because I've never seen a site have as many 'don't leave' warnings as this one.

Now don't get me wrong about the page that pops up. As irritating as I find it sometimes, with all the spam that likes to spread around here I think it is a good idea. But topping it off with the arrows is horrendous looking and insulting.

I really don't mind the new username symbols, even if they are a little bit bigger than they should. At least I don't have the ~ in my name anymore, that really annoyed me and it felt like it was there by mistake or because I needed to add up a random letter so my name could be accepted cause it was already taken or something. -.-u I would still prefer the links would be in a different color tough, as it's very close to the background color and it just blends in making it hard to read.
Mentions are a wonderful thing. Even if some people joke about this being like facebook, I don't mind it at all cause it makes it easier to keep track of things, and you can expose someone directly without needing to go to their page saying "oh hey, I mentioned you in this journal/comment/deviation, could you take your time reading it?". It's more professional in my opinion.

About browsing. I never use "what's hot" since I usually browse with a purpose and I HATE the "undiscovered" with a passion. Sorry, but I do. To me, undiscovered should be deviations that have no comments or favorites, no matter when they were submitted, or haven't reached a minimum of both, let's say 25-50 (like some groups about unknown deviations state). About 80% of what I see on "undiscovered" and especially what is on the top, is so packed with both comments and favorites that it's just ridiculous to even be in this section, just because it's on it's 24h time period. Once they reached a certain limit they should be automatically removed to give room to REALLY undiscovered deviations! About "what's hot", I feel that 50% of it are daily deviations. While I understand that, well, having that mention would make them really popular obviously, maybe they should have their own search folder, like for undiscovered. One thing that really bugs me is that you can't make searches inside of both "what's hot" and "undiscovered" so that really defeats it's purpose, from my point of view.

Lastly I would like to suggest some notices about groups to be created. For exemple when a group closes or when they delete one of your already submitted deviations, a message should be sent to you, so you are aware of what happened and don't just stand there looking at your Correspondance Message numbers and wondering why they suddenly got lower. I know some people will not like the extra message, but I for once would sure like to be warned of what happened instead of going trough my messages/deviations trying to figure out what is missing. I understand those kind of messages not being when a watcher unwatches you, or a unfavs you, it's their personal choice, but groups should have a little bit more responsibility about this and give it's watchers a notice.

Sorry for the wall of text, and thank you for reading. ^^

Changing the size of the font doesn't work, for some reason.
Like
this

< small > works, though.

What I think is a good idea, is depending on how long people are here, they will get a reward, or depending on how many days. For me Deviantart is not really wanting me to get on any more. I wish Deviantart would but in this case its not.

The background color is just eck, people should be able to change there background, not just there journal pages, etc.

Sorry for my complaining. Have a great day!!

The new symbols don't look too bad. I was very comfortable with the previous system, but I guess I could get used to these with time. Would be nice if they were smaller and more discreet though.

The only thing I don't like is the blue color of our usernames, it doesn't match the background color at all. I think the color of the usernames and the symbols should be switched. Also, the new group symbols are too colorful and obnoxious, they keep distracting me as I'm going through my watch messages. I think they should be made smaller, or just go back to being #.

As for what's hot, I don't use it at all. My front page is always set to newest and I seldom use it to browse DA. I mostly find new artworks through groups. DA, your fair exposure system really ruined the search system and the front page. I think you really need to change it up a bit, or just take it away.

But the problem is that many users still don't know how to disable them, so they sometimes receive something awful about themselves, like the one I was involved someone saying how the person disagreed with an artist that makes mature content featuring underage character.
Well, I won't disable mine because I curious and love to see what other people are saying and I never get offended by bad comments, actually I find them interesting. So for me so far the Mentions works well.

I don't think I've ever used What's Hot before; if I browse, I usually just type in a keyword (or scroll down the main page a couple times). And I myself don't have a problem with the new username icons (or whatever they are). I feel like it's such a small thing, it's not really too big of a deal to me. They are very different from the old ones however, so I can see why people might not like them very much (as also the style is different, not just the symbol itself).

The category browsing feature really sucks now  what happened to all of the thumbnails that we could look through instead of these 4-5 pics per page now  some things are better left alone. It makes it no fun to browse when you see only 1 deviation on the screen instead of a hundred on a page that WE could pick through and visit.. Very disappointing....................again

Hi there! Sounds like you've got Full View turned on. If you go to the main dA home page and look in the top right corner, you'll see these three buttons:

The left button is the standard Wall of Thumbs view, the middle button is Grid of Thumbs, and the right button is Full View. If you click on the left button it should go back to the standard view you're used to. :)

What really disturbs the view from a design standpoint, is the colour of the new symbols,.Its different from the link colour and to dark for the faded colour (like the date) its often seen next to. I wonder of you could change it one or the other way around, so my eye don't bounce back after each "paid" name.

I personally feel that the previous symbols
were a lot more professional looking and a lot less of a distraction.

Now, on each page I go to, the first thing I notice is the symbols,
which I think makes the general look and feel of the site a bit untidy and somewhat childish looking.
I also feel that a deviants 'rank' isn’t important enough to be so conspicuous.

Maybe, if you insist on keeping the new symbols, it would be better to make them a lot smaller?
Though even then they would still be more of a distraction than they need to be.
This is just my opinion as I view DeviantArt as a website for professional artists,
and so the main focus of the site should be art, rather than pretty symbols. xx

:P

[edit]

In the end, some people are willing to spend $ on their profiles here, and if that means they get a distracting symbol, I guess I can deal with it.
I don't particularly like all the extras myself if we're talking about a "meta" presentation of the artworks here.
I would rather submit works in a more or less extreme sterile and individually isolated condition for others to experience, so that each work speaks for it's self... to the extent that I probably would not pay a sub because of even something as slight as the offsite link nannying, let alone the clutter caused by tacking on membership level symbol to all usernames, and/or the many other minor ubiquitously inflexible peculiarities of the site.
The only requirements I really feal strongly about here are points on ease of navigation for accessibility reasons. I feel that once we leave that realm, and travel from content to the presentation of discussions and forums, my concern are irrelevant however, and must to be set aside so my respect for the DA devs can be put in it's place.

On that note, I do not feel I am not "missing" anything, as know I am just fine as a community member here w/o any associated "payed privileges"(of which I remain ignorant of).
If I had that big of an issue with DA design customization options, I would just make my own site. Honestly HTML is not really that big of a mystery, and neither is networking or marketing. They are just things you do, and they get done and you reach your market, or you don't do, and you occupy the equivalent of a construction site.
So, with that, what's "wrong" with DA isn't really relevant to me here. I feel DA gives me much more than I would ever venture ask of it.
DA is absolutely awesome. I love it and this community, and openly thank all those who fund the site, helping us all make it the great network of artists that it is.
DA is unique and innovative in the breadth that it spans and no amount of nitpicking can change that for me.

So, to recap, I concur on several of your points.
But, while ASCII generally has a more "professional" feel, it can lend to a more "sterile" and less warm environment. Due to that, I would have to conclude that for the feature, customized gfx do seem more fitting for a creative community such as DA.
I like the symbols just fine, should users actually want them.
I simply hope paying members have as much leeway in applying them as they could foreseeably desire. That is to include color, size, and position in alignment with their name, or exclusion from using it entirely. What we do in social environments is an expression, and this being just one more layer of frosting on that, I can appreciate it.
I do have to disagree with any statement as terse as "this site is for professional artists" however.
Obviously that is true, but as I said it is merely a bit terse...
This is much more a place where professional and amateur artists and their appreciative and loving fans can congregate, explore and expand their familiarity with one another, and generally enjoy the human experience.

Ah you have some very true points there that I agree with.
I am very grateful for this wonderful site where I can showcase
my art to the world, get opinions of fellow artists and discover new amazing art.
However you misunderstand my use if the term 'professional artists.'
I do not mean the site should be only for the use of high-level artists,
As deviant art is a site for all levels of artists to grow and mature their telents,
Which, I must say, is one of my favourite aspects of the site.
I meant that the artists here treat art in a professional manner, as everyone
here has a genuine love of art, whatever their level.

I like a clean, attractive looking page layout as much as the next person.
Theres no reason the site cant look stylish and appealing,
particularly for a website of the artistic-minded, but
I have a worry that the site's main focus, though it will always have to
ultimately be art, is shifting slightly more to that of a social networking site,
such as the likes of Facebook or Twitter. In short, less is more, in my opinion. x
