The New Profile Tabs

Mon Aug 12, 2013, 5:47 PM

As part of an initiative to make deviantART more user-friendly and clearer, tabs on the Profile Page have received a visual and functional uplift!

The tabs on Profile Pages (Gallery, Prints, Favourites, and Journal) have been visually improved for consistency, cleanliness, and an overall up to date appearance. Navigation elements have been moved to the left column of the page, and the placement of major elements of each tab have been aligned so that the transition from one tab of one's Profile to another is more smooth, natural, and clean.

In addition, when viewing tabs of your own Profile, you can easily add to that tab! The Gallery tab prompts you to submit artwork, the Prints tab prompts you to submit a Print, and the Journal tab prompts you to write a Journal entry!

Hey $wreckling, i just noticed something off regarding the recently updated profile page tabs. That is, the one found on some Group pages; the currently active tab, in particular, is a tad too dark, so it doesn't blend nicely with the "blues bar" that it sits upon.

Here, i've made a screenshot of it:

(Tell me if you want me to report it as a bug, or if this one right here is fine!)

Bug report, please! Thanks for pointing it out. :ahoy:

Hi dear dA staff,

Here are some things your loyal beta-testers have to tell you...

Please take it into account !!!!…
ocean-dance Featured By Owner Aug 18, 2013
i really don't see the point in a huge submit button right in the gallery. it doesn't look very clean at all. in fact it's too distracting. just keep it where it's always been. same goes for the huge feature and scrap buttons. why is any of it getting bigger? if i need a bigger size i'll just increase my zoom; no need to do it for me. sheesh,
Mindslide Featured By Owner Aug 18, 2013
Mmmm... how do I sort by favorites the images of one's gallery?
PuffyPrincess Featured By Owner Aug 17, 2013
I really dislike the submit buttons. They're so huge and bulky.
It takes away from the organization and cleanness of the page.
I really hope it's removed.
DavidDeb Featured By Owner Aug 17, 2013  Professional Traditional Artist
how much people that hate the damm BUTTON do you need to understand?'s so frustrating
it's an ART gallery, not a submission menu!
maruka-chan Featured By Owner Aug 17, 2013  Student Traditional Artist
Honestly, the only things I didn't like much and made me really confused were:

1. THE HUGE SUBMIT ART BUTTON ON THE GALLERY / HUGE JOURNAL TAB. Srsly? It's not like it's THAT much of a bother but.. I prefer having the small button back. ; v ; Makes things more complicated.. like it's taking most of the page .___.
2. THE FEATURE / ALL / SCRAPS BUTTON THINGY. Sometimes.. I like the old one.. because it's more convenient to see the Gallery Folders first, not those big ones.. It's kinda nice, but it would be better if it was a bit smaller? O v O
3. THE "SUBMIT COMMENT" BUTTON. We can clearly see it. Even in the past. You don't need to make it bigger. And now, every time I want to put an emoticon, I still have to click the "+ Add Media" button and wait.

I like some of the improvements.. and I hope you would try and think about it. Most people would like it better if it was simpler. "User-friendly".. right? O v O  Meow :3
TheDutchesse Featured By Owner Aug 17, 2013  Student Digital Artist
I really, really, REALLY don't like that the featured/all/scraps buttons is located above my folders. I purposely had it so that my commissionns folder was at the very top of the page so potential customers could see the work I've previously done. Now those buttons have taken the most prominent place on the page. I much preferred it when they were in their much more subtle previous location.

That aside the submit  button has got to go. I want to view my gallery as other people would, to see how it looks, now everything's just a tad different. There's a well-funtioning submit button at the top of every page, we really don't need more.
AxelCat9 Featured By Owner Aug 17, 2013
orz I agree with others- giant "submit" button in a gallery is really annoying! D: and it takes a lot of space and gives me a feel of thumbs being disorganized in my gallery + I've never used it and I don't plan using it ._. I hope it would be possible to remove it somehow :C
and I don't see the point of this update/change as going for being "user-friendly". When I first joined DA it took me very fast to understand how things work and I'm sure users will agree with me.
Tadpole7 Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013
Most of the updates I'm neutral about but the submission is rather clunky and replicated to many times. I do updates from the front page using the top, discreet, submit button. Which is very functional and put's everything where I want it.

Visibility is good but not at a cost too the display areas layout.
JesseAllshouse Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013
Why the need for the Submit Art button in my own gallery?  Is there anyway to turn if off?  I find it completely unnecessary as there is a clearly labeled Submit button in the navigation bar at the top of the page.  I don't mind it in my Journal section but in my galleries it takes up the space that an entire deviation would.  It just seems redundant.
WaterStreetNorth Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013  Professional Photographer
I have no problem with the navigation elements all on the left side of the page. But with others here the thumbnail size "submit art" frame is totally obnoxious and offsets the thumbnails! Not to mention being aesthetically displeasing.
Pepper-Head Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013
The Prints page doesn't seem very well thought out, my eye has no place to rest at first glance. It goes all over the place but still doesn't know where to rest.

I'm also very against the huge submit button, as are a lot of people. It's HONESTLY not that hard to click or hover over the stinkin submit button on the nav bar.

Deviantart, your users aren't blind. We can see submit buttons. (I'm still displeased with the huge green "SUBMIT COMMENT" button... *shivers*)
ken1171 Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
I have to agree with the others here - this giant "submit" button right inside my gallery is more annoying than helpful. Why fix something that wasn't broken? This is not only annoying, but it also takes space away from my gallery that could be showing more content. I remember that used to be important for dA just a while ago, and this goes against that.
CanisLupusDingo Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013  Student Digital Artist
This really, really doesn't work for me. Aside from being an aesthetic abomination, everything about this "new profile tabs" update is annoying, and makes me feel as if dA thinks I'm going blind or incompetent. Please return this to what it was originally--the original format was more user-friendly than this is, and it looked more aesthetically pleasing. Please, please, please listen to the tons of negative feedback the good people of dA are giving you!
LittleCorax Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013
I'm agreeing with everyone else. Giant "submit" buttons for art, and journal are BAD. They are UGLY, and horrendous.

I also dislike that there is not longer a separation between the gallery folders and the actual art. Bad idea.

Having simple buttons at the top, just under the tab name, was simple. It was easy. It wasn't ugly and in the way.

The ONLY thing I like is that journal history thing on the right, where i can now see how many pages of journals I have, and can find them a little more easily. But that's it.

The submit stuff, like the button bar at the top of each tab, WAS FINE AND DID NOT NEED TO BE FIXED.
DTKinetic Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
We really don't need "prompts" to submit anything :disbelief: Quality artworks and meaningful, important journals are not going to be inspired by or motivated by a gigantic button that always stares you right in the face, even after your newest post. They have the same appeal as spam or an advertisement box.

The current submit button was never in a hard to find place. Anyone who would complain about that really didn't spend one minute to figure out the site and look it over. Originally, this site was not Windows 8 where the simplest things were made difficult. The average user may have needed to visit the FAQ a couple times, but you didn't NEED a tutorial to figure it out. And initially with the new submit page, many, many deviants felt that it wasn't user-friendly.

But with these redundant submit buttons the site feels more cluttered, unbalanced and generally unprofessional.
LateStarter63 Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
The Jumbo-sized Submit buttons are ugly and totally unnecessary.
Krisantyne Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I can't believe the giant Submit button abominations are still there. Just how many more complaints do you need?
Kiwi-Ink Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013
Nice way to ignore the fact that the majority of users was against this crappy huge submit button. I start to wonder why you even ask the users if their opinion doesn't matter to you anyway. The huge button is ugly and unnecessary and it only ruins the design of the journal page. My custom boxes and poll look like squished now. -__-

 The new GIANT "Submit" is annoying and unnecessary. I always use the Submit button in the top menu line. Plus it screws the look of my gallery when logged-in. That's not what I call an  improvement!
 There's no longer a line, not even one pixel to separate the left column from the actual gallery.  Both parts now float into each other. Bad design. On deviation pages you gave the right partly improved sidebar another color. Why don't you do it here, too? Or give us the pixel line back. Plus you changed the size of the left column, so ones own buttons (instead of the standard thumbnail) are cut off on the left side.
 All the changes you made to the gallery, screw up each and every gallery CSS. Thank you!! :sarcasm: I now have to update all my gallery skins again! First the big thumbs, now this!! This is NOT encouraging people to create more gallery skins when one has to correct them with each change you do!

The site was user-friendly before. Some changes may be helpful to the overall look, but most are totally unnecessary!!! Do not fix things that aren't broken" There are other things which are more important to be fixed which aren't working since months.
poserfan Featured By Owner Aug 17, 2013  Professional
Thumbs Down Oh, and I forgot: Why does the subfolders, now have a big "create new folder" in them, when we aren't allowed to make subfolders in subfolders???
When clicking this button, it appears "you're only allowed one level of subfolders!" Why implement it then???? Simply stupid!!
DTKinetic Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I'm definitely agreeing with you here. The site was plenty user-friendly 3 years ago and had the right balance and implementation of their features. Now everything is either rearranged, excessively/unnecessarily added, or even dysfunctional :disbelief:
poserfan Featured By Owner Aug 17, 2013  Professional
Yep, that sums it up!

It's not rocket science to submit anything or navigate the site.
neokasey82 Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013  Student Digital Artist
I like the convenience, but then again you can hit the "submit art" button in the "submit" drop down bar at the top of the page. I just don't think the button is necessarily needed.
MystykNess Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I wouldn't mind having the submit button if it weren't so freakin' huge. Maybe if it was small and less in the way, it'd be fine. Twice now, I've almost clicked it by accident by trying to access one of my deviation pages and it's kind of annoying.
ZuTheSkunk Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013
For the most part, it's okay I guess. But I would really appreciate it if:

1. There was a line separating folders and gallery images;

2. There was no giant "Submit Art" button, it's rather unnecessary and annoying.
Leathurkatt-TFTiggy Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
The giant "Submit" buttons are necessary and clutter the page, making it look very ugly.  I would suggest getting rid of them entirely since the drop menu at the top is very easy to find and simple to use instead of people having to go to their own gallery or journals to post new submissions.  The rest, while mildly annoying, I suppose is fine (though I preferred the cleaner looking links bar).
bot-chan Featured By Owner Aug 16, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
I have to wonder: are there really members out there who didn't know how to submit stuff without those ridiculously huge submit buttons? Out of all the things needing attention, this was really the most pressing issue at the moment? I find this hard to believe.

I think the new tabs are great. It makes it easier to submit work without having to click through the main top menu and it does feel cleaner and sleek.
MyBrokenRoseUnfold Featured By Owner Aug 15, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
Gallery: Well, I do like the "add folder" gigantibutton, but it certainly doesn't need to be massive. Do NOT like the random "submit" button in my gallery, kthnx. I have how many submit buttons? I have a freaking submit MENU at the top of my page, for the sake of cheese and crackers! I have submit buttons on my Profile! Don't need more. AND it screws up my view of the gallery pages, so I can't see how it looks to other people. Also, the "Featured", "All", and "Scraps" buttons would look better at the top of the page, and the stupid folders-from-art divider was fine where it was. Why is it now non existant, and WHY DOES THE ART GALLERY DESIGN ON MY FAVORITE ART WEBSITE OFFEND MY ARTISTIC SENSIBILITIES?!

Thank you, and good night.
MyBrokenRoseUnfold Featured By Owner Aug 15, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
Mmm, yup, yup, journal page now looks like poop. CHANGE please. Thanks.
QueenEgg Featured By Owner Aug 15, 2013  Student Digital Artist

You've pretty much fucked up my page and my journal. All the widgets on the journal sidebar look completely screwed. And whats with the automatic resizing of pictures on my profile? DON'T DO THAT ITS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. You've COMPLETELY thrown off the balance of my page and the journal and almost EVERYONE AGREES.

Aleclipze Featured By Owner Aug 15, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
It looked better before, now the Journal History tab looks all squished, and those submission buttons look too big... It just takes up too much space. Do we really need that submit art button in our gallery?
LovelyAdversity Featured By Owner Aug 15, 2013  Hobbyist Photographer
I agree with :devMissvirginia:. Those submit buttons look horrible. They take up way too much space on the page. Sure, the layout looks absolutely lovely.... if it's not your own profile page.
TheShadeCreature Featured By Owner Aug 15, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
I do rather like this new layout.
Missvirginia Featured By Owner Aug 15, 2013
Moving the  navigation to the left looks lovely, but those large submit buttons everywhere look horrible For once, can this be one of the things you get rid of. Please?

Pardon me. but you probably know of DAhub. well the update has caused his bot to be down for the week and said it would not be so long if dA talked to third party devlopers. so could you please get to dAhub and start talking with third party developers.
DavidDeb Featured By Owner Aug 15, 2013  Professional Traditional Artist
smooth, natural, and clean....NO THAT'S CERTAINLY NOT!!!
the recent changes such as that useless BUTTON and the UNEVEN space between deviations (longer title or folder's name a dev is in push the next deviation away , creating a CHAOTIC gallery) totally unaesthetic
my journal's poll show that 80% of the users are UNHAPPY with the BUTTON
BloodyWilliam Featured By Owner Aug 14, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
those submit buttons are crazy big for no reason.
i'm a real dope with computers and managed to figure out how to submit stuff WITHOUT needlessly gigantic buttons. does the "submit deviation" button REALLY need to be as large as a gallery thumbnail?
PokeTheCactus Featured By Owner Aug 14, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
It was already user-friendly enough, the 'Submit Art/Journal' buttons were clear enough before this, and they didn't invade on a stupidly large amount of space. In this attempt to make the already user-friendly interface 'better', you've just made it look worse. People will figure out how to use the website, its simple enough, the layout is nice and the buttons are all clearly labelled and there's an FAQ entry for pretty much every basic issue people may have, so why does it the site have to be dumbed down with huge obnoxious boxes.

The new tabs down the side are the only nice things about this update.
IllyDragonfly Featured By Owner Aug 14, 2013   General Artist
It's not a bad idea, in this way I can submit new works/journals in every moment I am in the gallery. :)
Nicktoon-Grl Featured By Owner Aug 14, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Like every other update, the horizontal scroll bar appears.
Also, what happened to the option to toggle the gallery/favorites folders' positions to left or right?
