Update to the Deviation Page

Tue Sep 10, 2013, 1:39 PM

During the past month, we've been testing a number of changes to deviation pages. As the tests were ongoing, we monitored performance and community feedback, allowing us to make adjustments and improvements along the way. Thanks to such feedback, we've further improved the deviation page and have just released the latest updates sitewide.

What's New

  • More From This Artist has been made more prominent! Thumbnails in the More From This Artist section have been made larger and are now based on an advanced algorithm that will surface work that is more relevant to the art currently being viewed, helping to bring more attention to you and your art.
  • More from deviantART results (formerly titled More Like This) appear beneath More From This Artist.
  • The right sidebar of the deviation page has been visually uplifted, with each section of the sidebar being given a clearer heading and given a cleaner overall appearance. In addition, the background color of the sidebar has been changed to help distinguish between the main section of the page and the sidebar.
  • The Edit and Delete buttons have been moved near the top of the sidebar, appearing just beneath the Share Buttons for easy access when modifying your deviations.
  • All buttons in the sidebar have been given an updated styling, making them easier to find than before.

Moving Forward

We are going to continue evaluating the performance of the deviation page, with the long term goal of increasing traffic to you and your art. This change was made to launch the aspects of the new deviation page that performed well, but it is one step in a much larger process toward creating a better performing deviation page.

While we continue to monitor how these changes perform, we will also further think through the areas of the deviation page design that were tested and performed poorly, with the intent of better implementing changes to benefit your work. In the meanwhile, your continued usage and feedback will help us to create a better deviantART.

During the past month, we've been testing a number of changes to deviation pages. Thanks to your feedback, we've further improved the deviation page and have just released the latest updates sitewide.

More From This Artist is a great idea, but I'm having trouble with the "advanced algorithm". I do varied forms of art like photography and pixel art, but it happens rather often that a picture of e.g. a flower has pixel characters next to it.

I like it considerably better this way.
The deviations ' look ' much better
and I like the changes to the buttons.
But the favorites and download buttons
bother me , as it does many others.
Other than that , it's good enough for now.
Btw , I love the "idea" of MLT , But as it
stands it's horrendous. Isn't there any
way to sort these ?
With all of the brilliant minds we have here.
Why don't we have a Contest to figure out
the best way to fix the MLT problem ?  Or ,
at least , something to make it better.

The 'More from this Artist' change is so much better.

Now if you can only stop the inflation art and Sonic the Hedgehog art showing up in thumbnails in the 'More from Deviantart' section, that would be a huge relief (Almost all
my fan art is Elder Scrolls art. I hate having two completely unrelated subjects showing up next to my submissions. Moreso because I happen to hate both inflation and Sonic art. Ugh ...)!

I have to say I LIKE this update and I especially like the "More From This Artist" button, it's allowed me to stay searching where I want to search and allowed me to see far more from specific artists letting me see more of their works instead of just a few. :D   to this update, thanks for doing something RIGHT for once in your "bettering" of the site. :D   :D

I think this update is actually a good update!

My only problem--why is the Download button bigger than the Favorite button? I think it's just begging for someone to repost your art instead of faving it. Not to mention that I keep hitting dowload by accident!

I do like that "more form this artist" is finally more prominent. I still have issues with the "more like this/more from deviantart"; mainly that I feel that if it is going to be next to my work, that there should be some way to at least choose what gets featured there. I have several comic pages where "more like this/more from deviantart" features a bunch of neko-hentia comics (which, other than the aspect of being comic pages, have nothing in common with my comics). Even in less extreme cases than hentai, I still find it annoying when it's just a bunch of art that I simply don't care for, yet I'm being forced to advertise it. I realize that "more like this/more from deviantart" is going by similar tags and categories, but can't it maybe show things that have similar tags/categories that the artist has favorited? Or possibly make a ban list of tags you would like to filter out (example: I don't want those neko-hentai comics, I can add "hentai" to my list of banned tags, and anything with "hentai" in it's tags will not appear in the "more like this/more from deviantart" of my deviations.)

I do like the "more from this artist", at last as big as "more from deviantART", and above it!

I often visit the gallery of a deviant after having discovered a deviation that I like, so I find this "more from this artist" very useful.

Please could "More From DeviantART" either be removed completely, or could we be given the option of disabling it on our artworks?

I never liked "More Like This", and I don't like "More From DeviantART" either, for the same reasons: I feel that it is not necessary, and not acceptable at all, to have thumbnails of other peoples' art displayed on one's deviation pages; the only work that should appear on an artist's deviation pages is work by that artist.

I also dislike "More From DeviantART" and "More Like This" because the work that they display almost always has absolutely no relevance whatsoever to the main work on that deviation page; also, no offence to anyone, but "More From DeviantART" and "More Like This" often display work of a potentially offensive nature next to work that many people would not find offensive.

I, and many others, would really appreciate it if "More From DeviantART" was either removed completely, or if we were given the option of disabling it on our artworks, as then those of us who find certain content offensive wouldn't have to worry about such content appearing on our deviation pages.

Thanks in advance!

I definitely like this version a lot better than the initial update. I'm not sure if I like it better or the same as the original, but I'm definitely not disappointed at all. I love love love how "More from Artist" is in the spotlight compared to "More Like This". The adjustment in thumbnail size I like a lot too. I'm still a bit iffy on how "More from deviantART" is still there and still the same size as "More from Artist" (in my head I wish there were a way Artist could stay big but More from dA could be smaller like how the original "More from gallery" was, because I still really hate the idea of advertising for others' art especially when it often has nothing to do with my pieces. Call me selfish!) but I do understand that would make things sloppy. And admittedly I've found myself going on excursions around dA by following the More Like This so I guess that's a good thing that it's making me explore, even if I end up getting trapped in it like YouTube's Related Vids! :giggle:

Thank you very much for listening to us and working so hard, dA staff. You're doing great! <3

Also I agree with someone's suggestion for a search system for Notes, if that's possible. I know I try to find a single note in a sea of them after 7 years of not deleting!

Not sure if this exists yet or no, but when I try to search for something I'd like to make an option to x out a category I don't want. For example I want to look up bases and I get photography, thus x'ing out photography section will make it easier for me to find. :3

OK, only a YEAR after the fact...

DA forced us all to suffer the subordination of our art on our OWN pages for a full year,
in favor of spamming our gallery pages with all manner of irrelevant garbage (nudity, offensive content, etc.),
and claiming all the while that they were working toward the best interests of its membership.

had DA corrected it horrendously misguided "feature" in the first place, when the complaints began,
within a reasonable time, instead of trying to defend pushing our art and info to the bottom of the page
(forcing each of us into the position of "shill" for whatever junk MLT wanted to push onto our pages),
a round of 'thanks" might have been warranted... THEN...

NOW, a year later, all i can see is DA finally screwing its collective head on a lil straighter,
and doing what SHOULD have been done a year ago.

One does NOT earn thanks for doing what SHOULD have been done in the first place.
One merely earns a rep for being slow to recognize one's own best interests...

pay attention to the membership next time, and make the proper responses / corrections
in good time, if you really want to live up to your (thus far) questionable assertions above:

• "the intent of better implementing changes to benefit your work"
• "continue evaluating... the deviation page, with the long term goal of increasing traffic to you and your art"

let's see some small "track record" of DA actually LISTENING to its members this next year...
then the kudos will come as and when deserved.

I couldn't agree anymore. When I finally saw that they corrected their mistake, all I could think was: "About damn time. Shouldn't have taken them so long". They'll get no 'thanks' from me either.

If I can like your comment, I would.

And this is why I stopped paying DA for membership a long time ago. They are just too busy with milking the website for more money, more ads, and ridiculous memes such llamas and I dono what.

8 years ago, this website was about art and artists. Now its just another facebook.

I see it heading that way rapidly, yes...

very glad to see a comment from one who actually grasps the problem with DA's current mindset regarding their so-called "upgrades"...
I get a lil tired of defending this position in the face of folks who just cannot understand the issues...

I don't have the ads to worry about (hooray for AdBlock), but the whole "social network" paradigm leads me to despair over the future of the WWW
in general, society in an immediate sense, and DA in specific...

I like to think I'm not the only "artist" who abandoned FB in favor of DA, since its focus appeared to be better oriented on art...
I also like to think I can remain here, since DA couldn't possibly be misguided enough to become another FB wanna-be...
not holding my breath on that last notion, though...

Someone else said, and I completely agree, showing the whole list of groups one belongs to on the "submit to group" pop-up would be tremendously helpful.

But the changes thus far are awesome!

When you add a picture to a group from the deviation's page, can you have it display a list of ALL the groups your a member of instead of only "Recently Used"? It would be much easier to submit that way.

I always look forward to dA's updates, and this one to me has been one of the greater ones. I love that our gallery has more attention now, and I love that the "More from deviantART"/"More Like This" is now even more related to the deviations we put up. For the longest time I've been getting deviations unrelated to my own, so I was really happy to see that. Thanks for all the hard work you guys do! :D

One step to compressing the page alittle would be to make the More-From-This-Artist and More-From-DA as expandable divs (No change to the actual layout). That way, people aren't scrolling the whole page looking for the :thumb: link. Just a thought.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if you could just make the buttons on the top right like "Remove from messages" and the "Add to favorites" always in the SAME placement. I have clicked the wrong thing there SOOO many times now. It is really hard to go through my messages. :(   Other than that I don't have any other problems with it. If you were really interested in increasing our "traffic", you would get rid of the whole "More from deviantART" section entirely.  For most of the people on this site, it only reduces our traffic, because most of us never have our art show up there, meaning that it leads people away but never leads them in.  My work looks bad enough already; I don't need or want other people's far superior work displayed right next to it, screaming at visitors "Why are you looking at her bad photos and poor fanfic when you could look at ours instead!"

your artwork can appear in MFdA too. do you have any proof that it reduces your traffic? our stats show exactly the opposite, having MFdA actually increases the overall deviation views on dA.

I've seen the idea pop up among people who aren't particularly confident in their own works; they're generally concerned that when someone visits their deviations, they may easily abandon them in favour of other deviants and deviations displayed via MFdA.

However, I share your view on this one and feel that these artists are ignoring the needs and wants of the audience. I find myself using this tool often enough and I'd hate to lose it. My only peeve with it (not really a pet peeve, I just think it would be cool if I could) is that when I click on the MLT button to see more MLT results for a certain deviation, I can't also use the search bar to filter the MLT results I'm getting.

From the perspective of a realistic critic, I'd say if you don't like your own artwork, you can always take it off DA. However, given the broad variety of people's interests, there WILL be people who, at some point in time, want to look at it, even if it isn't polished-and-shiny-perfect. Personally, I like the idea of having More-From-DA available as long as it's similar results in the same category. For example, if I'm looking at pictures of Superman made with traditional media, then I would like to see more pictures of Superman made with traditional media, not comparing pencil to Photoshop. However, there is no filter on the M-F-DA, and I imagine any implementation would be cumbersome for both the programmer and user.

Please give an option to turn off the full blown scans when I'm doing a 'search' for something on DA. I call up a search for a  topic and instead of getting thumbnails of what's available, I have to wait till full articles load instead of thumbnail. My connection is a slow one so it takes far longer.
