Ash has hailed down onto Los Angeles for months,
orange-yellow flames sifting into gray flakes
of regret, years' worth of resentment and stale
plants that make far better fire fodder than anyone
would ever openly admit;

when the soul is aflame, it, too,
leaves ashes behind as it consumes
the fodder of years' worth
of untreated regret.

Slash-and-burn is not sustainable, but
natural fires will take what they need, and, afterward,
what they want, then what they will.

When the flames are sated, the charred lands
will need time to heal. At times, years
may not seem enough; at others, months
will bring new grass through the surface, life
alight inside the soil even when it looks
completely dead—

nature is a god of its own, its fire burning
inside, outside.
